Probably a dumb question, but when I preview an effect on a track in SX3 I can only hear that track and how the effect changes it, when what I really want to preview is how the effected track will sound in the mix, if you see what I mean. Is there a way of previewing an effect on a single track while all the tracks are playing ?

Badly worded, but I'm sure you get the point.

Um...just use the "Bypass" button on the effect? Are you talking about "Send" or "insert" effects?

I'm talking about audio - plug in - choose an effect, say reverb. Click on preview and it plays the track with the effect added, but not all the tracks together. If I'm adding reverb to vox (for example) I want to hear how that vox with the added reverb will sit in the whole mix - I'm not so interested on the track sounds individually.

um, again are you talking about an insert or a send? all audio plugins are either one or the other...

um, OK. I'm using off-line processing, which I think answers my own question. I need to use either insert or send to be able to preview how the affected track sounds like in the whole mix.

Your posts did actually help me figure out the answer, so thanks for that.

Now if only I could understand the difference between insert and send......

Inserts are used when you want the whole signal to go through the plugin, like with an eq or a compressor.

Sends are for when you want to still hear the original uneffected sound along with the effect, like delay and reverb.

Thanks for the succinct response Farview. Seeing as they're the only effects I use, I shall use them in the way you've described.

Just because you click Audio - Plug Ins and choose the effect you want. I did it to get started quickly without having to read the manual :)

Ah. its usually easier to RTFM then asking questions on how to do things incorrectly, no?
