I'm completely new to recording, and have been doing a lot of research around here. I'm trying to figure out what I need to record my band with my low budget.

I am looking to record a 3 member band (Drums, Bass, Guitar/Vocals), and I have absolutely nothing except for Sonar 4 PE. My computer has 512 MB of RAM, and a ton of free space (180 GB hardrive). It's an XP running with an Intel Pentium 4 processor (not exactly sure of the specifics). I have an nVidia 6800 GT video card. Currently, my PC has 6 USB ports but does not have a firewire port (it is about 4 years old), but I can easily add one. My budget is $900 USD.

I am planning on multitracking, and buying more microphones (I will worry about that later). I'm probably going to use 2 overheads and one mic for the kick and one for the snare.

I was thinking of getting a PreSonus Firepod, various microphones, and moniters. I have all the stands and cables I need. I was thinking of going with this "recording bundle" from Musician's Friend.

Besides the bad headphones, it looks like everything there could be put to good use.

I was wondering if this would do what I want it to do. Is there something else I should be looking at to buy? Is the bundle worth it or should I buy thing seperatly? Is there any specific firewire port I should add if I need it? Thanks in advance.

I don't think that bundle is a great idea. You say you have the stands and cables so its not really necessary.

My set up is around $1,300.
Firepod...$600
Berhinger Truth Monitors...$300
Shure Sm57 x1 (guitars, snare)...$80
Shure B52 x 1 (kick, bass)... $140?
Shure pg81x 2 (OH)... $240

I also individually mic the toms but its not terribly necessary for ok recordings. See how you like this equipment with my link below. You can probably get the stuff cheaper off Ebay too. Sorry but I don't know any cheaper/lesser quality equipment. Hope this helps.

As For Mics for Micing Drums you can get a Bunch of SM 57 Clones for Really cheap and from what I hear they sound exactly the same as the Real SM57"s and they are some of the Best Mics for Micing Toms and Snare drums...

You can get the GLS ES57 (SM57 clones) for $29.99 or 10 for $199.99...You can use them for Drums and Micing Guitar and Bass Cabs and even for Vocals and at that price you save quite a Bit of Cash over the Real SM57"s but still get the Same Sound...

As for a Recording Interface the FirePod is a Good system but for the same Price you can get twice as Many Inputs if you got something like an "Alesis 16 Chanel Firewire Mixer" for about $600 or even better would be a "Mackie Onyx 400F" for about $800.....

I have a Really Cheapo setup but it works OK for me (For Now)...
I have a 8 Channel Mixer which I use to Mic my Drum set with 8 Mics and then send the Mixed Drum signal to my Delta 44 in stereo through Channels 1 and 2, I then Mic (Or DI) Guitar and Bass and Rout them in through Inputs 3 and 4 on my Delta 44 and Record Live and record Vocals Last.....

Good Luck

I talked to my bass teacher the other day about interfaces. He mentioned the Delta 1010LT. I would need a mixer as well, but the price is MUCH lower. Any opinions?

Thanks for all the help so far!

PCI is an outdated standard that is going away. If you can get one used for a hundred bucks and won't feel too bad if it won't work with the next machine you buy, go for it. Otherwise, stick with an external interface....

Besides, the Delta 1010LT's two preamps suck and have no phantom power.
