Presonus Firepod Performance Question

I was hoping someone could answer a question about the Presonus Firepod 10 channel I/O. I would like to add this to my recording setup but heard that it requires a much faster computer than I have. I currently have an IMAC G5 1.8GHZ system with 1GB of memory.

Does my system have enough resources to run with this interface comfortably or does the firepod require much more to function without problems? I would like to record up to 4 mics at once for drums (if that matters).

BTW - I know that the system requirements for the Firepod state that my MAC should have no problems with performance but I never believe that stuff until I have actually used it or heard from those who have.

Sounds a bit low for multiple inputs but I am sure you would get away with it. I'm getting the Firebox shortly. It doesn't have all the i/o that the Firepod has, and I have a much faster and more powerful computer than you...so I'll be right. But I reckon you might struggle...but if you configure things, cut corners, maximise everything you should be ok. Really, I don't know. Wait for the experts. I have given you my opinion. It is not really worth anything is it though. You need to hear from a qualified expert.

I own the FirePod and run it on a Pentium 4 with 2 GHz and 1Gb Memory. In the beginning it was shit but now I reinstalled the whole system and it works flawless.

I think a G5 won't have any troubles. But there are of course limits, you can't add unlimited plugins and stuff. So I think 4 mics won't be a problem.

It all depends on what rate your going to record at. If you MUST record at 96k/24bit then you may have a problem. If your OK with 48k/24bit then you should be OK.

what software are you running i have a iMac with the same specs as your sounds like running the firepod and while i do not run all the inputs at a time i have done four of them little or no trouble but lay off of effects as much as you can, make sure that your software runs well enough on your iMac also make make sure that of course you have nothing running in the background, Garage Band has some tips in it the make your computer run better for audio. i am about to start using Tracktion two and seems that i should have very little trouble with it. good luck and make nice music.

I have Cubase SX for the recording software. I try not to use too much of the built-in effects that come in software but rather my GNX4 for Guitar and the digitec vocal 300 for voice. Maybe some reverb here and there but does using external effects like this make a difference in recording rates(96/24) and performance of the computer?

Thanks Guitar Junkie.

while i am not fond of cubase i think you should be fine you miht buy thing and try it out and if it does not work box it up and take it back.. but i think you willbe happy with it we are about to record a band running all 8 inputs and i think my baby will take it. just remember to keep a clean hard drive ;)

PS. i have 512 MB of RAM and it runs like a champ a gig should do you well

well, i record 8 tracks at once on a g4 867mhz powerbook, so your puter should be fine.
