How does the Preonus Firebox compare to the original Mbox? I have the original Mbox and i must say i am not to happy with the quality of sound i am getting. I would say its me but i have heard people with similar/lesser rigs get much better sound than i am getting.

Was thinking about selling Mbox and picking up a Firebox.

Well i've only used the Mbox once or twice, but my friend uses it all the time, and i have to say he gets some really nice sounds out of it. I own the firebox which i dont really use for music, but instead record various bangs and whallops for sound designing. Is it just the general quality of the sound your not happy with? Or is there something happening to the audio when your recording? If your not happy with the quality then maybe something is wrong with it? I have never heard anyone say the Mbox is a bad piece of kit..

Also, i assume your using ProTools with your Mbox currently.. If you swapped to the Firebox this wouldn't be compatible (I dont think..), and so you would need to swap software (Firebox comes with Cubase LE).

The Firebox is my first real soundcard. It works fine. With my mic I found I have to turn the gain up to about 8 or 9. I have a CAD177. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it, though I record in a terrible room acoustically. I'm keen to experiment with some other mics to see how it goes with some variety. Also keen to record in a decent room. It's a good unit as far as I can tell. Sorry, can't compare it to the mbox, never used an mbox

I doubt it's the mBox. It ain't a NEVE but it's definitely good enough to not get in the way too much if the rest of your chain and technique are up to snuff. I would guess the firebox pre's and converters are on par with the mBox's. As someone mentioned, you won't be able to use Protools with anything not made by digidesign.

I guess its probably perhaps more of my recording technique. I have heard other people who just mess around with home recording get results much better than mine.

The above mp3 is two MXL 603's in XY, i think a foot or so away. I think i picked up to much room in this one.

The other guy's mp3. Same mics, similar size guitar, except his interface is a Mindprint Di-Port.

Here is the link to the original thread.

To my ears his recording much more clear, crisp, and realistic. I am trying to take the room equation out of the recording, but its tough, because too close and the sound gets to boomy.

This is all tough stuff. Acoustic instruments seem very to reproduce accurately.

I guess perhaps its not the Mbox. I dont know, part of me just wants to get away from Digidesign. I am aware if i sell the Mbox i will have to move to a different software interface. I will probably just use Sonar, since i am Windows.
