So, I just bought a sweet shure sm7b. I LOVE it so far, but one problem I'm running into is the preamps on my firebox just barely have enough gain to get the mic where it needs to be without getting crazy noisy. This is fine for now, as most of the singers I work with perform loud enough that this shouldn't be an issue.

My question is this: Clearly I need a new preamp. I'll start putting money away for that now, but in the meantime, what exactly is the deal with the +12db software switch for the preamps? Will turning this on give me a bit more headroom? Or should I leave it off and just crank the preamp until I'm at the right level?

It gives you a digital 12db boost. I have them turned on all the time with my Firebox. I use condenser mics, such as the CADm179 and the Behringer matched stereo C2's.

I get good gain with only the annoying hum of my PC fans, cpu and gfx card to annoy me. But I just pretend that it's genuine tape warmth.
