Which pres are better?

Which setup would you choose for a mobile recording rig with firewire and 16 pre's? Firepod x 2 or FireStudio+Digimax FS.

Other options for a similar rig?

I have a MacBook Pro, soon to have 2GB memory and 100GB HD...running Cubase 4.

FireStudio+Digimax FS without a doubt!!!! That's what I'm running and it's working out great.

So i should spend the extra couple hundred and go that route?

Sounds cool, are the pre's better than the Firepod, in both those units?

I'm talking about the lowest end Digimax, the FS, $600 one.

Thanks

If you currently have a firepod, go 2 firepods.

If you don't have a firepod, go for the firestudio.

You can get a firepod for $400 used... it's ridiculous!

I don't have anything right now...I used to have a ProTools setup with an M-Audio 18/14 interface, but sold that for money...

Now, this summer I want a good rig, i'm transfering to a new school, and hoping to get some recording gigs with on campus musicians and groups.

So, I think I'll go the Firestudio route...then I can add one, or even two if needed, Digimax/s and have 16-24 pre's! Sounds like money well spent.

Looks like I could even turn this into a Home Studio rig, by adding the MSR Monitoring System Remote! I think this is a smart route to go, because of the easy expandability from a small bedroom setup, to a good mobile setup, to a home studio setup!

Thanks for the help all!

I'm interested in an answer to the question. Are the pre's in the firepod/studio actually different?

when i called presonus on this i was told the pres are the same as well as the converters. just more features. since uits only 200$ more i would have to believe it.

A friend of mine brought his firepod at my place and we were able to record 16 tracks at a time, no problem on a laptop.

Not saying this is better then the firestudio (probably not as stable) but just saying that it is possible to record with multiple firepods without any flaws... We just plugged both firepods, boot the computer and voila! We were recording.

We are going to record a big band next week, I will let you know how it goes.

Yeah dude....fire studio and digimax, without question...if your looking for warmth or "color" of the sound...you wont really get that with either setup you look into, However as far as gain and clarity, i put money on the firepod and digimax....Plus Far better interface quality and you more then double your expandable options....plus the mixing software is way better too

well I have a firepod also... so we can daisy chain them and get 16 inputs (18 with spdif)

Definitely...

Go the firestudio route - the improvements are more than just mixing software as well. The new synch module within these products allow a much more robust word clock to keep the units in synch with the computer - far fewer dropouts and lost synch problems.

I should know....I bought a firepod 2 years ago - added another one 6 months ago...and I REALLY wish I would have waited for the firestudio/digimax mix. Firepods chained are a hit and miss proposition - just go to the Presonus' forums and check out that particular subforum. It's very revealing.

If I were you I would get the Alesis Multimix 16.
It has 16 individual inputs that are sent to your pc through firewire, however only 8 have mic inputs, the other ones are line only, so you might need another 8 channel pre-amp.

I think the Presonus route is better for my situation, I need a very mobile rig. With the Presonus gear, I could have a 2-3 space rack, a mic/cable bag, my laptop, and a mic stand bag...and be able to record an entire band at once. That's my ultimate goal for during college.

With the addition of a free faderport with the firestudio, I could still easily mix the projects once I get back to my room.

Any of you have Leopard and getting the firepod/firestudio to work? Presonus hasnt made the driver yet and I'll find out when I get my mac in a week.

works fine on windows so far though.
