My next piece of gear for my home studio is a compressor to keep my vocal transients under control. I have a very limited budget and so I'm considering the Presonus Comp16. I've read one review that gave it high marks. Does anyone out there have experience with this compressor. I'd like to know more about it's quality. Thanks!

In general everything made by Presonus is good quality. I read the same review and am strongly considering one for my own studio.

Depending on what gear you have, you may not NEED a compressor in the signal chain at all.

If you can run software at 24 bit then there's LOADS of headroom and you can happilly track each take at a volume maxing at 12db and compress and crank it up in software. That way you could save the money and spend it on another gadget instead... new preamp???

What's your setup?

My current set-up is very basic, but I try to max out what it's able to do. I'm using a basic Cakewalk studio program that does NOT record in 24 bit, so I don't have that luxury of the headroom. Here's my signal chain:

- B2 Pro (Behringer) large dual-diaphram condenser mic
- M-Audio DMP3 dual channel mic preamp

From there it goes straight into my computer's soundcard. So far, I'm pleased with the sound I can get with this signal chain (even though it's not exactly pro gear), but my one outstanding need is to get those vocal transients controlled. My mic is much more sensitive than my past "dynamic" mics, so when I have to give higher notes more air, the increased volume clips sometimes on the recording unless I use really good mic techniques, which I don't want to have to do so much.

Everywhere I've turned, I've heard or read that presonus makes good stuff. So I think I'm going to give the Comp16 a shot. It's affordable (home studio budget) and it just may do the job I need it to.

Thanks for the inputs!

In that case you could do a lot worse than Presonus. Give the unit a demo and see whatyou think of the sound. A compressor in that price range is unlikely to be transparent but you can still get v good results.

Go for it. ;)
