I am thinking about buying a bluemax.I am interested in this piece of equipment because I have limited experience using compressors and the presets make it easy.I need to know if this is a waste of money because I plan to use it on an important project.Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

Everybody's going to jump on here and tell you to buy the RNC, instead - and they're right, to a great degree, it's a better sounding compressor. However, if you're new to compression and are looking for something easy to use - then the Bluemax is DEFINITELY the way to go. The presets are very useable, and in fact, even with a rack of other new & vintage comps I still end up reaching for the bluemax for the acoustic guitar settings. Very nice.

I dunno, people might disagree with me and I might get flamed for this, but... I think the thing sounds flat-out great. I'm happy to have one. And especially for somebody without much compressor experience, I think you could easily dial in a BAD sound with a better compressor than the bluemax - if you stick to the presets on the bluemax, it's pretty tough to screw it up. No way in hell would I call this compressor a waste of money, I'd call it an extremely good deal for the cash. http://www.bpmmusic.com had them for $129 including shipping, last time I checked!

Check the reviews at the presonus site, or elsewhere on the net. I don't think I've ever actually heard a bad thing said about it! Well, I probably will now, but, oh well...

Thanks for your reply Flansen.I think the bluemax is a good idea for me right now, but, where can I find more info on the RNC?Who
makes it?Does it have presets? What is the price range new/used?I am still interested in other opinions about the blue max. Thanks guys this web site is wonderful.I have learned so much already and Im looking forward to learning much more!Peace

I have a Blue Max and I think it's great.. The presets are all I ever use, and they work..

Ok, I have a question for you B/Max users. I got a hold of one and the one thing that seems completely out of wack compared to all the other comps I've used is that even at it's highest setting, the compression threshold is way to low to alow anything but large amounts of gain reduction. Allmost all the settings are heavy-handed. I didn't like the control limitations at all, not being able to take just a little off the top.
(I guess it's an input 'gain' control used as compression threshold if I recall.)
Am I off here?

Wayne... Actually, there are different threshold settings used in the presets, you just can’t adjust it manually. Look in the manual at the preset descriptions. There should be at least one close to what you need.

And for the best price, I’d just find a used one in good shape. I’ve seen them go for around $90 used, but like new. I found mine at a Guitar Center clearance sale advertised for $100. I offered them $65 and they took it! (I know you hate me for telling you this, but it just goes to show – ALWAYS ask…)

abuscus, in the near future I was planning on putting my Presonus Blue Max for sale here at the "For Sale" forum of this
BBS. It's in excellent cosmetic condition and works perfectly.
If you'd like me to send you a "private message" for price and
shipping terms, I'd be happy to do so. That way you'd get first
dibs on it before it hits here or eventually e-bay for more $$.

It's a "good" sounding compressor, just not in the same class as
the RNC IMHO. I think it's also a good choice for live work where
you'd be more upset if someone stepped on your RNC instead!Sometimes it's also handy to use different compressors on different sources to make each stand out more.
The point is that if you "graduate" to an RNC, the Blue Max can still be handy. Being a "Meek freak", my secondary unit to an RNC
is a Joe Meek MC2 (more expensive than the Blue Max) BTW.

Thanks so much for the quick replies ya'll!Thanks chess, but,I've already gotten hold of one.It sounds really good and I am completely satisfied. The presets make it very easy to use.I have looked into the RNC and Im considering it as my next compressor.Any opinions about the RNCanybody?

There are a few presets that seem to have less of a gain setting, but I couldn't get there in the manual mode. That's mostly where I ran into the threshold issue.

What about DBX 1066

I've also heard that RNC is good... but does that mean it is good for the Price? what about compared to little higher grade comp like DBX 1066?

Is there tremendous difference between RNC and DBX 1066??

Am I tripping? Doesn't my BlueMax have a manual mode, where I can control it?
titan,
PEACE
