I see that the presonus has gates, i dont need more gates so i thought maybe getting two RNC's instead.

Can anyone tell me if there is much difference in the quality of compression in these two units?

Can't comment on the Presonus unit but I do have two RNCs. Very very nice compressors. The only downside to them is unbalanced operation only (which ain't really a big deal as most inserts on consoles are unbalanced) and even though they're stereo units they can't be used in a dual mono situation. I hate wall warts too. The dual mono thing is easy to get around by getting two. These things are VERY nice compressors.

Yes Blue i know your a big fan of the RNC.

I dont really want to buy another compressor apart from either of these mentioned for a while, is the RNC a good all rounder? can you really squash somthing as well as do the delicate work??

Yes...

I'm not sure why you'd WANT to "really squash something", but yes...... the RNC does that, and delicate work, too!

i dunno bruce,

i have once or twice compressed the fuck out of the drum overheads and got an AMAZING energetic drum sound. allthough, we're talking valve comps so it'll be different!

Actually, a favorite trick of mine DOES involve squashing --- take a mult of the rhythm beds, squash the crap out of them (but set the attack and release to time the pumping with the tempo), and bring a bit of that back into the main mix -- really gives a nice push to the groove...........

The RNC does this kind of thing very well too!

i have'nt had much time with the RNC but i would advise you to get it on the strength of so many people liking it.

to be honest, i only like "squashing" stuff like overheads with valve comps. gives it that nice edge. i dont even pay attention to the meters if im doing stuff like that!

bruce, that trick works well when you're doing that big chorus thing. is that what you use it for?

What do you mean by "big chorus thing", Romesh?

I use the technique whenever I want to draw out the rhythm beds a bit more.... I find it really only works on more up-tempo stuff....

Bruce

i use that kind of thing sometimes when im after a lot of energy in the chorus. i agree, only really works with up tempo stuff.

hey bruce, i might be coming on a holiday to canada soon:-) is it a nice place? whats weather like in december?

It's a great place -- if you like Husky dogs and snowshoes! ;)

Oh - and get used to living in an igloo!!!

:D :D

In my quest to find a better unit then the R N C i came up pretty much zip 0 nil nothing

im told if you want to step up from this unit you would have to get an Empirical Labs distressor and this seems to be a mono unit as well

Im not sure how true all that is but thats what im hearing and this source was from audio.pro.rec

Ive also heard in many places of late r n c might be releasing a pro version of the r n c could cost anything from 600 to 1200 dont quote me on that its the chatter ive been reading on many news groups so i feel we may need to wait a lil and see what fmr audio has in store for us next

Bruce, I've been trying to do that for some time now the hard way (through listening and trial and error). Sometimes I get lucky. Is there a more scientific way that you use to sync the attack/release to tempo?

Thanks.

Well -- you could use a tempo-matching chart to determine the time in mS -- but that doesn't help if the compressor's knobs aren't really well-marked with time-points.

You really just have to move the knobs until your ears tell you it sounds good!

Bruce

trebles,

did you say the next compressor up from the RNC is the distressor? no way man, im sure there's plenty of better stuff in that area before you get to the distressor's price.

Thats just what i heard someone say over at rec.audio.pro while reading through one of the older posts there anyway in your opionion what is the next direct step up from the r n c as i have two of these already.
