can someone point me in the direction of a good thread addressing multi-channel mic pres?
would anyone have any suggestions for a naive shopper?
m-audio octane- anyone out there own it or have any useful information?

tanks.
maybe this shoulda been in "the rack"?

oh, and just for clarification, i'm looking for at least 4 channels (pref more) and hoping to get into one for not much more than $500. pipe dream?

I've got an Octane. I love it. Clean, quiet, digital connection gives me 8 more channels into my system through my Tascam.

One other thing--it's got send and returns for each channel. This is important because the returns don't touch any part of the Octane's signal path--just straight to digital. I use those returns as a sort of digital bridge for all kinds of other pres.

So besides being 8 clean, transparent pres on its own, its a great way to get other pres into my system.

interesting.
from what i've read, it has features that i don't even need with my current caveman setup, but might use if i end up expanding my system.
right now i'm just looking for the pres.
i've definitely been eyeballing that box for a little while. i was also hoping someone could make an alternative suggestion if they were aware of something out there better suiting my needs for a lower price, but i also realize the tag on this item (pretty much the same as 4 dmp3s) is pretty reasonable considering what it can do.

Focusrite Octopre

I recently purchased this pre. It. has 8 pres with dynamics (although the compressor isn't great).

So far, I've been impressed with this as a very transparent, powerful pre.

Anyway... Just an alternative to consider.

so does the focusrite octopre work as a PC interface as well?
that's the impression i'm getting...

re: sytek - happen to know anyone who's selling one?

Nope. It is not an interface. I plug my octopre into my M-Audio Delta 1010 interface through the analog D-Sub connector. Works quite well, and is 100% compatible with Ardour / Linux.

I Don't have the Octane but i own 2 DMP3 And i Really Love them.I also recently bought the Line 6 UX8.It is a USB Audio Interface and the Modeling Preamps Are Great! (API,Neve,Avalon etc...)That could be a Very good Option. And you can get one Of those Used for $280-$350.
