hello men,

looking for a preamp, not interested in spending more than 350. planning on doing stuff like this:

mic>preamp>saffire pro 40> logic pro

general preamp thread

GO!

At this price range look into the used market, you will find the best bang for buck. I have found a few good preamps in this range when building my studio. Things you can find at that price that are good are
Focusrite ISAone
Presuns Eureka
Trident S20
RNC RNP

If you were looking to buy something new, save your money. You would be better off getting a different microphone or a new TV. Just my opinion. There are some cool preamps in that price range new, but they wont be better than what you have in your focusrite interface.

Presonus Studio Channel
not much else worth recomending

What microphone do you have?

The pre amps in the Saffire Pro are actually pretty good and you'd probably have to spend rather more than your budget to better them. However, spending a lot on a specialist pre-amp then plugging in an "average" microphone is a bit of a waste.

The transducers in your system (i.e. in this case the microphone) makes a far bigger difference to your sound than the pre-amp unless you're talking about super cheap rubbish which the Saffire isn't. Beyond that, mic placement can also make a far bigger difference than the pre-amp.

Software comps and eq would be the first choice. cost wise.

the Saffire is probably as good or better than the $350 range pre you mention. Good clean pre's, I tried that unit but it was a bit too high end$ and I couldnt get the firewire working on my old rotty pc. But it had really a great sound, imo.

If you want outboard pre's ...for ease of the analog touch...at $350

Joe Meek VC3 hasnt been mentioned yet. Its $249 new, $150ish used. Mono channel strip.

the DMP3+RNC is really a cool combo. and thats 2 channels. It would sound different than your Saffire, add some colors to your system. around $350 ish...
this combo always pops up, its been recommended long before I ever arrived here.
personally i think its the RNC that offered the cool sound...DMP is pretty plain by itself.
2cents...

anyone have anything to say about the True Systems P solo?

i heard that's pretty good
