Hi, im very new to this whole microphone thing and want to know first of all, whats the difference between the shure sm48 and the pg58? the pg58 is a little cheaper so im wondering if its worth the extra $10 or so to get sm48. also what exactly is a preamp and do either of these microphones need it?

They're both lower cost versions of Shure's SM-58. I think you've got the mics turned around... the pg58 is the best of the two. I'd save the bucks ($98) and buy the real SM-58, a nice 20-25 foot mic cable ($20) and the M-Audio DMP3 stereo mic preamp ($150).

Yes, you need a mic preamp with all professional low impedance balanced output dynamic and condenser mics.

For around $269, you'd have a pretty cool front end for your recordings... one that you won't have to make excuses for. If you can't make your tracks sound good with this setup, it's definately not the gears' fault! ;)

Later on, you could add a RNC ($175) to do the compression chores, and maybe a good, lowcost large diaphagm condenser mic like the Studio Projects B1 ($100) and another mic cable ($20) and you'd be ready for LOTS of fun... :)

Actually, the PG series is their "budget" versions of the SM series... useful for something innocuous such as talkback, but crap for anything else, IMO...

Getting an SM57 or 58 is a worthwhile expenditure - those mics are workhorses.... if it doesn't say SM57 or SM58, then it isn't - the PGs don't come close, neither does the SM48.....

hmm... well i dont need anything too good, in other words expensive. my budget is no more than $100 for everything. i saw the usb samson c01u in one of the other topics, would that be good because i wouldnt have to spend the extra money on the preamp? im gonna use the microphone for both singing and also regular speech that i use for animations and stuff i work on.

maybe the co1u would work for you, you work in front of a computer so maybe having the mic just next to it could be good for you

i dont know about quality though

You're not going to get a preamp and mic that's usable for $100... you could get on musiciansfriend.com and get an mxl 990 set for $60 (which is at least kind of usable for more detailed stuff like vocals and acoustic guitar... the pg and lower end shure stuff won't be) Add to that a low end preamp like the M-Audio audiobuddy or even something behringer and you won't go over the 120-140 mark which is close to your goal. I mean I don't know what you've got going on, but assuming you're using an integrated sound card... that should be enough to at least get started.

Yes - "lower cost versions" was my "nicer" way of saying "budget"... but who knows? Maybe an SM-58 wannabe like the pg48 or pg58 would be OK for what lochenjons is trying to do...

I still think he'll have problems without a real mic preamp, regardless of what mic he decides to buy.

i think im definately gonna look into more the samson c01u because thats really a lot easier for what im doing. but will it really be that bad of quality? i hate having anything thats not the best but i have hardly any money so basically im trying to get more with less. for vocals and spoken words, is the c01u the best mic/everything thats needed for it to work, for under $100?

MXL 990 mic ($60) + ART Tube MP or Behringer MIC100 ($50)

That's about the bare minimum. C'mon, you can do $110. Just eat Ramen for a few days and save your pennies. :D

Yes. In the scheme of things... 100 dollars is NOTHING. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll regret buying a mic with a preamp built in. Work an extra day at minimum wage and you are half way there.

how can i connect my co1u mic to the mic100 preamp?

i have the co1u usb mic. and i want to get the mic100 tube ultragain preamp. but how would i connect my mic to it? is there adapters u can buy or anything? or another kind of preamp? let me know plz

Hey Big Kenny! how are you? .......I'm a little curious about this myself.
Guess we'll have to sit back and wait for a reply.
Hope it doesn't take 5 years!

I pretty sure there is no way to connect a USB microphone to another preamp. :(
That's part of why most people here don't recommend them... I think. If you had a microphone and separate interface, you could add a preamp, get a new microphone, etc. without ditching everything you already had. If you upgrade, you probably want to go that way instead of choosing another USB microphone.

It at least shows that the person tried searching for existing threads before posting.... Even if he/she neglected to see the date. :p
