Preamps and mixers with SM57

Hello everybody,

I've got a Shure SM57 that I use to record myself onto PC and my band onto my minidisc, but the PC's soundcard obviously has a shitty pre-amp on it, and although my minidiscs is not bad, I have heard that it can bust the Mic socket by going in straight from a mic.

So I was wondering what Pre-amp or Mixers would be good for getting a decent sound from one, or maybe 2 mics recording a band (1 guitar and vocals, 1 bass, 1 drums), maybe stereo if possible.

I've read around here a lot but it's hard to get specific recommendations, I've heard the Behringer UB802 is quite good, and previously I thought the Audiobuddy, but heard it doesn't sound that great with the SM57.
I've got a budget of about £60 (~$100)

Any help would be most greatly appreciated

Whoever you heard that from was wrong. In my opinion the SM57 is one of the best designed, most durable and best sounding microphones out today which sounds good thru almost any capable preamp.

From your description of your needs and budget I recommend that you go with the Behringer. It's not the last mixer you'll ever need to buy but it's a good place to start and a huge step up from where you are now.

Thanks for the reply, i'll go with a Behringer then. Does anyone think itd be worth spenidng a bit more for the the higher models in the UB line , e.g the UB1202 or the MXB1002? What kinds of things would be improved, just the number of inputs?

Yeah, just the number of inputs. The MXB1002's claim to fame is that it can be battery powered, but the mic preamps are no better the UB802.

Hello!

I agree with the SM57 being a "standard" and "workhorse" mic, that's almost synonymous with "Rock & Roll",...

but in practice, I've found that the SM57 needs a little EQ tweak on the "input-side" of the chain (before entering the recorder),... with a slight boost of the high end and a little bump in the mids & lows,... to really shine.

m-audio dmp3 . Little over the price range, but worth it

i have a question but i didn't know where to put it! Hope it's the right thread....anyway, today i bought myself a SM57 Mic that has no cable included(it's not wireless but i didn't get the cable with the mic) and before I had a mic for 10$ and it had a cable that fitted my soundcard (1'4 or sth :P) so i just connected the mic to my PC and recorded- and it sounded good!
As some of you know, SM57 comes without cable (as i mentioned) and I want to know which cable should i buy that i could directly connect the SM57 to my soundcard! Is preamp really needed? (i'm asking this b'coz my previous mic worked fine without it)
Thanks and sry for bad english! ;)

The Shure SM 57's I have all came with a chord (cable), case, and stand from Mars Music...maybe that is why they went out of business..could not afford to include the extras...as part of the package.
