Im looking into buying a preamp in the $300-500 range. What are a few of the best band for buck deals in that range and what are some of their characteristics. I would want it to warm up my mics, but yet not too obvious of the coloring. Also i would like it to have a direct in input so i can also use it to direct bass. Let me know.
thanks.

One of the better deals in that price range is the PreSonus MP20. 2 channels, Hi-Z inputs for recording bass direct....I like the sound of the direct bass through the MP20 a lot, but I never use it because a have a Bass POD.

Mindprint Envoice and Focusrite Penta are also worth looking into. They have compression and EQ too. ART Pro Channel and HHB Radius 40 are a little more money but good if you want something with tubes.

the meek unit tdukex is talking about is a high quality mic pre...it has a optical compresser (which i really like) and a four band eq (very musical...big cuts or boosts don't sound bad like digital does). im very happy with mine.
