what is a good preamp? i will be using and audiophile 2496 and recording mainly acoustic music. preferably not too expensive.

are you looking for a tube preamp?

and also are you going to run a pre amp to a mixer or just the preamp....help me out a little more on what you plan and/or already have

i don't know the difference between a preamp and a tube pre. just preamp, i have a guitar, a mic, chords, comp w/ a 2496.

I use a Behringer V-amp 2 in combination with my audiophile 2496. I use it to record electric guitar direct, acoustic guitar miked, bass and vocals. It's not that expensive and a very versatile tool. You can check it out here:

If you're only going to record a miked acoustic guitar, you won't need all the effects the V-amp has so you might be better of with some other preamp I guess. If you're considering to also record electric guitar and bass I'd definitely recommend te V-amp 2.

the behringer v-amp 2 looks good for me. how much is it?
also, i am j/w, can you use an amp for a preamp? b/c from what i gather all a preamp does is get the signal up to line to record, right? can an amp do that?

Yes, most amps have a line out that can be used to record. Nine out of ten this will sound like crap, with a lot of noice and/or distorted, YMMV. You'd definetly want to get a preamp.
As I said, if you're gonna record electric guitar you’ll want something like the V-amp2 or the Line6 Pod. If you only want to record vocals and clean (acoustic) guitar, you’ll probably be better of with a preamp like the DPM-3 as maestro_dmc suggests.

again, j/w would a distortion pedal work?
Can you use it in between your guitar and your preamp? Sure
Can you use it AS a preamp? No

If you are recording acoustic guitar, don't use an amp moderler or a guitar amp. What Maestro said.-Richie
