Hello all,
Am needing to change my current audio interface (MOTU ultralite mk2) as my new HP
laptop has no firewire connection.
Have read that the preamps in interfaces don't measure up when compared to standalone preamps (i guess that's a bit obvious)
Quite like the idea of buying a nice preamp and then somehow connecting tht to my new laptop via USB, but was wondering if this is worth the hassle, considering I'll have to run through a DAC (?).
I'm running Cubase LE5 on Windows 7 and would rather not spend over $500.
Any ideas? Have a slight headache due to the amount of choice/options in this area.
Thanks in advance...

Philip

You would need to run the external preamp to the line input on the interface.

Does that mean that only the mic (XLR) ins on an audio interface run through a preamp? Maybe then I just need an interface without
mic ins.
I've read good things about the Golden Age Project 73 pre amp, so would prob get that.
Any recomendations for an interface that would compliment it?
Thanks

Philip

Be careful. A lot of interfaces (and mixers for that matter) just insert a pad in the circuit for line and run everything through the built in mic pre amp. You'll probably be safe if you find an interface with a couple of dedicated mic channels an a bunch more line level inputs. If you go with your plan of buying one without mic inputs then you know!

right, thanks for the heads up. I've just found out that my MOTU ultralite runs preamps for the mics but none for the line ins.
Shame I don't have firewire on my new PC laptop to use it. Ah, progress...
