I'm using a T-Rex Spindoctor preamp/overdrive as a distortion pedal and it is connected to a H4n recorder. I was wondering if my sound would get better from getting another preamp to replace the H4n.
not to sound like an ass-hole but why not record it and see if it sounds good or not? If it clips and distorts you then have your answer and then you can set your gain levels properly to get a good sound.

Well in order to do that I would have to buy the preamp first.. No worries about sounding like an ass-hole; you did not So I was wondering about whether or not getting (buying) another preamp would make my guitar sound better. I do not play through an amp.
ahh my bad, I thought you had it I can't read apparently.
I actually don't have any experience with that, but I'd assume as long as your gain levels were set properly it would be fine. If your original signal was set properly so the signal was already amplified to the line level and then set the next gain level properly so it doesn't clip your over all signal would still be at line level so it wouldn't distort. And even then I don't know how close a boost pedal would get you to level, you may have some extra head room left where you could still turn the gain up on the next preamp in the path.
now the quality of the preamps could be called into question. If you use shizzy preamps your looking at the possibility of having all sorts of extra noise.
I'm sure someone else will chime in shortly though.
