for vox im looking to upgrade- or get gear since i dont have dedicated vocal gear....im looking at an mxl v67g and a sp b1, going into a RNC compressor...then into a mackie....

before i go into my mackie should i put it through a dedicated vocal pre?? what pre what best tie together my compressor and mics for rock vocals??? how about the RNP?? or are there others out there that oyu recommend and why?

looking at the rnp its a little outta my pricerange- for a preamp im thinking around 200 bucks-how do you guys rate and compare the Studio Projects VTB-1, and the DBX preamps?? im using them for rock vocals- what are the pros and cons? does the SP only have 1 inputs and the dbx 2?

DBX makes both single and dual channel preamps, but the better ones start at about $500 (DBX 386). The VTB-1 is a single channel
preamp. The VTB-1 also has a TRS insert. use that to send and recieve from the RNC. The compressor does not go in front of the preamp. Then bypass the mixer, and go straight to the recorder or sound card. Why take the signal from a perfectly good pre and run it through the preamps of a mixer?-Richie

And why bypass the preamps of a perfectly good mixer? You may want to hang onto your money and just use the Mackie preamps, as at $200 you are basically making a sideways move.

If you can save up more money over a longer term you could buy a better preamp that really would be a noticable improvement over the Mackie.

I think I agree with SonicAlbert, up to a point. He's right that a <$200 pre is not a quantum leap over the pres in a Mackie board. I'd say if you have an earlier Mackie board, even a cheap pre, such as DMP3 would give you 2 channels of somewhat better and is worth it. If you have one of the VLZ pro series, it takes about $500 to buy a substantially better preamp. Good luck.- Richie

thanks guys...so im not gonna get a preamp im gonna use the pres on my mackie...but, question....how should i set up my compression in terms of my mixer and my recorder?

Does your mixer have channel inserts or aux send/receives? If you have inserts, it's real simple. The board sends the (unbalanced) signal to one side of the RNC and returns it by the same TRS cable. Tou can send 2 channels that way, but they'll get the same compression settings. If you don't have inserts or effects send/receive, outboard gear has to go in line. What model of Mackie board are you using? Someone who owns one can help you better than me.-Richie

yeah-i have send and receives i'll look on the mackie site and look
thanks
