Slowing becoming un-noob.
Alright, I'm recording with a firewire mixer and as far as I can tell I can't get the auxilary to work when recording. I've tried a lot of things, if anyone could help me with that, that'd be awesome! But my question is, when you use a preamp do you use the auxilary? Or well, like, do you plug the mic into the preamp then the preamp into the mixer in a regular in? If that makes any sense and you could help, thanks so much! :)

Alright, so like if I have a preamp for 8 channels. will there be 8 xlr inputs and then 8 xlr outputs? does it work like that?

what mixer and pre-amp do you have?

Do you mean an external 8 channel preamp? Then there would be the obvious 8 XLR mic level inputs, but the outs would be line level (that's the point here right, to get up to line) but could be on XLR, 1/4 (TSR for balanced) or sometimes a single multi-pin for connecting to a snake.
Each of these could feed an A/D converter on a multi-input soundcard.

Your firewire may or may not have it's aux outs feeding the converters.

I really dont know much about preamps, and I don't have one. I'm just asking these questions trying to figure out how preamps work/are plugged in. So yeah.

I have an Alesis Multimixx 16 firewire mixer. I just use that to record. I'm looking into getting preamps and I really have no idea if I'll be able to use preamps.

Preamps aren't plugged in through the auxilary, are they? and they don't require the auxilary to work do they? My mixer doesn't allow me to record things with auxilary.

So yeah, answering that question would be awesome, thanks. And if anyone is willing to answer my long list of questions and help me out some, that'd be awesome. so yeah.

Thanks so much!

Depending on the type of outputs from the preamp, you can plug into either the stereo line in sockets on the mixer or any of the mixer preamps slots (xlr or 1/4 inch). This will then feed through your firewire.

Hope that helps.

Alright, I think that helps. Thanks :D

Just so as the auxilary isn't needed.

It isn't.

Most likely, your preamp will have 1/4 balanced (TRS)/unbalanced outputs.

A balanced cable running from each output into one of the stereo line inputs (I think these are inputs 5-12 on your mixer) will work fine.
