Preamp Questions?

First off, what is a preamp? I am vaguely aware what they do.

Also I have what can be considered old old, mixer how will that affect end recording quality?

A preamp is amplifier that is meant to take small amounts of signal and boost it up to another level. Usually thay are low voltage, medium gain amplifiers. There are lots of different designs that have different personalities.

An old old mixer isn't really enough information. Most of the older mixers used transformers and are noisy-er than newer ones, but that isn't always a bad thing. And in some cases preferred because of how music passes through certain transformers.
