The short answer to your question is don't worry about the patchbay. If you only have three or four pieces of gear, it's faster to just hook them up directly.
The other thing people forget to mention about patchbays is that you end up spending a LOT of money in cables and connectors. It's kinda like a hidden cost in the equation.
Save that money for some more rack gear. When you have enough gear that it's a pain in the a** hooking it all up, it's time for a patchbay.
By the way, the SOS article Bruce linked to is a good source of info when you do get to that point. In fact, the
author recommends wiring your pre into your group insert returns.... a good solution for the problem you started this thread on.
