Preamp Choices

My apologies for the cross post...I think this is where this belongs:

I am about to bite the bullet and upgrade from PTMP and the Firewire 410 to a Digi 002R. I'm very interested in adding an addition mic pre to my purchase to get it all 12 months same as cash and at the same time.

I'm considering the Presonus Eureka (single channel) or the Presonus Digimax FS (8 channel with ADAT out). Pricewise, I can get the Eureka for $399 or the Digimax FS for $599.

Does anyone have an opinion here? Are either of them worth getting? Will I be so astouded by the upgrade from the FW410 to Digi 002's pre's that I am wasting money?

The real question is: how many mic preamps do you need?

If you only need one in addition to what the 002 has, then spend the Digimax budget of $599 on one or two channels of better preamps. So in other words, make your budget $599 no matter what, and then figure out how many channels you *really* need.

The DigiMax with the 002 gives you 12 channels of preamps. Do you need that many?

For my current plans on recording full bands, the 12 moves me in the right direction for sure. I also feel that it will allow me to expand on my system in the future (going to 18 inputs at some point) since it already has ADAT installed.

What's your take on the pre's? I've heard good things for that price range.

The SP828 isn't a converter though, so only four of those channels would be of use with the 002, since it already has four preamps.

If you are going to be recording bands, then having the extra channels will be very important. It seems like the DigiMax FS is a good choice for you right now. The Mackie Onyx 800R costs just under $1,000, which is much more than the DigiMax FS.

Sure would be sweet to see a firewire or ADAT expansion slot in the next issue... That would keep it in the same price range... but attract a far larger audience... (such as myself) who would love the converters built in, and gladly pay for the expansion card...
