My friend is looking for a preamp and microphone to record his classical guitar. Stereo preamp and matched pair mics. What would everyone recommend? Buget would be a maximun of $4,500.00 for both.

How about a matched pair of Neumann 184's ($1,500) coupled with a Grace 201 ($1,799)?

track rat is "rat own " with the mics and use 'em with two john hardy's or a great river 2 if there are no price restrictions

With that budget he should go to a good music store and try out every combination of mics and preamps they have until he finds one he likes. ;)

I use an MK-319 and a Line Audio DP-1. Budget: $450. ;)

I think your right about testing the pre’s and mic’s out before purchasing. I not sure of any pro audio store’s in this area (Greenville, SC). I think Soundpure Audio is about 5 hours away. This is where one of his friends purchased a Avalon dual mono pre. I heard the recording (classical guitar) on a cd that was sent over and it sounded great. A scheops mic was used on the recording. He really liked that sound, but there are so many pre’s and mic’s out there it makes it hard to narrow down options.

With that budget, go to a few high end studios and record on their equipment and see what you like best, then buy it. That should help even out mic and equipment, but there will still be differences from room acoustics and recording technique.

I'v only done one Flaminco recording..would love to do some more it..was great listening to a really good player play..I got some nice results with a pair of Graces and KSM44's..I wish my room was a little better.....Good luck sounds llike fun

In that event, I am going to go way out on a limb and suggest . . . an Avalon dual mono paired with a Schoeps.

Yea chessrock, he probably should get that setup. I was just looking for other options that would be comparable and maybe less costly. He is using a AT4040 thru a mackie at the present time. I am sure that's why he was amazed with the avalon and schoeps. I can't remember the model of the schoeps mic that was used. It was something like mk4 or mk5.

For mics, a pair of Schoeps, likely the CMC6/MK4 or the CMC6/MK41. $2,165 for a hand matched US set.

For the pre, Pendulum Audio MDP-1A. $2,250 street price.

Total heaven for classical or acoustic guitar.

Avalon AD2022 and a pair of Josephson C-42's. I've never gotten to use the Schoeps mics, but by all accounts, they are top-of-the-line SD's.-Richie

Recently, I compared pairs of the Schoeps CMC6/MK4, Neumann KM184 and Josephson C42 on fingerstyle acoustic guitar (which admitedly is not the same as nylon string classical r flamingo guitar - but close). The Schoeps blew the Josephsons away creating an accurate, detailed and musical reproduction of the actual player and instrument. I've heard the Josephsons, with their rather large HF bump, may mic better at a distance and certainly work well (perhaps better) for an acoustic guitar track that is destined to be part of a larger mix.

That's kind of a tough call. I think Schoeps might be one of those things where you actually get what you pay for, and where the extra money is justified. Bummer, isn't it?

I know someone who owns some of the top-o-the-line mics like Schoeps, etc. He kinda' pointed out the Audio Technica AE-5100 . . . you can get them cheap on clearance from Full Compass. He seems to think it compares well to his fancy-schmancy mics. :D
