Pre/channel strip question

I'm currently using a Rode NT1 (I know, I know) into a Delta Omni Studio to record my wife's singing. I'm going to be buying a new mic soon - maybe a C1. I'm also thinking of getting a channel strip - something like the Focusrite Voicemaster. Here's the question: will I notice an improvement at that price point over the pre's in the Omni? Pre's, compression and EQ in the same box sounds like a nice way to work, but is this the best way to go considering what I already have?

How is your Omni Studio coming along with your wife's singing? Any pros or cons with the Omni? I just bought one to records my wife's singing too. Any success?

I'm pleased with it up to now. A lot less noise than my old 20bit Darla and Studiomaster mixer.

Pros: Good, stable drivers, plenty of input and routing options for my one-track-at-a-time way of recording. 2 - headphone outs. SPDIF input that I can hook my SBlive card to.

Cons: Would have been nice if it had been 19 rackmount like all my other gear. Knobs are a bit fiddly.

The only other thing I would say is that I've already used up every input and output so I'm thinking of adding another Delta66. It's not like I need to record multiple tracks - I just hate unplugging and plugging stuff.

Hope this helps.

the Omni has some good clean preamps, but when you move up (and Id recommend taking a few suggestions by posting a $$ budget) to something in the Focusrite range, youll definitely notice it....it will put the "c" in clear and the "f" in full......

Take a shot at the Grace 1st. I think Brent Averill has an API in the $700 range. I may be wrong. That focusrite isnt nearly what the red series is. The red series gives me a boner, but thats just me.

My budget for the channel strip is $500. This is just an arbitory figure, but given that this is just a hobby for me and no-one except me and wifey get to use this stuff (and listen to the results) and the law of diminishing returns I think it's a reasonable number.

grace, focusrite?

well, they are very good, but they dont give you the phatness or control of the symetrix 528.

For your wife's singing, it will be perfect because it has a compressor, expander, deesser, three bands of fully sweepable fully sweepable eq.

Whats more, its about $250-300 on ebay.

Opinions on the Symetrix 528e as a preamp/channel strip, esp. for vox?
Compare with the Focusrite Platinum VoiceMaster.

Hi J,
I have both a Symetrix 528 (not e!) and a Focusrite Platinum VoiceMaster.
The Focusrite sounds a bit thin compared to the beef I get from the Symetrix. I consider it as a more 'vintagesound' oriented pre in comparison with the Focusrite Platinum VoiceMaster. Also the Symetrix EQ eats the Focusrite for breakfast... Pitty them pods crackle even after cleaning them... should try to replace them I'm afraid...

All the best,

TdB

I like a lot the symetrix[528]and unless you get the red focusrite than forget it.go with symetrix!!!![just my opinion!!!!?]

Hey RGS,
How's about a patchbay instead of another Delta 66. Prob cheaper, and all your plugging and unplugging will be at the front of your system instead of behind. Easy on the neck.
