pre / post?

this is probably a stupid question but...

am i to understand that setting the aux outs on my mixer to prefader is for monitor sends and postfader is for effects sends? or am i totally wrong here

Yup that's right, Pre Fader for monitors so that once the performer has a mix they like it wont change when you move faders. Post Fader for effects so that when you fade out a channel the effects will fade out too, If you don't want the effects to fade out you can use a pre fader aux.
