I’d like to postion a mic pre in a spot that will provide easy access to it while recording acoustic guitar. My concern is the longer cable length needed to connect the pre to the A/D convertors. It is my understanding that as long as you used balanced cable there should be no signal loss. Is this true?
The output of the pre is XLR, the input of the A/D convertor is ¼” TRS. Would it be acceptable to use a mic cable connected to a ¼” high impedance transformer? Or should I purchase the “right” cable for the job?

Thanks in advance,
Terry

The transformer serves no purpose here, and a cheap one will degrade your signal. Get the correct cable.

Thanks for the advice. But then the concern is the length of the cable from pre to convertors. My understanding is that since it's a low impedance cable, there there will be no signal loss whether it's a 2ft cable or 20ft cable. Is this true?

You've got the right idea... but there's always some signal loss regardless of the cable... A balanced cable provides a better signal path and vastly improved isolation from other interference.

20' will not be a problem...

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice. Last night I picked up a pair of Mogami XLR/TRS cables and everything is working perfectly. It's great to be able to reposition the pre/channel strip for easy access while recording acoustic guitar.

Terry
