Hi,

I have a tube pre-amp now but I'm wondering if I'm using it wrong.
I hook up the XLR from the pre-amp into the XLR of my mixing desk with the gain on minimum. That direct out goes to my digital recording thingy.

Should I connect it to the line in?
Or should I connect it into the insert?

Sorry about this utterly stupid question !!

The purpose of the p r e a m p is to bring the mic signal up to line level hence it should to going to the line input.

Insert or better, straight to your recording deck etc.

No. The line input still goes through the board pre-amp. The insert bypasses the board pre-amp and allows you to use the high $$$ pre-amp at its best.

This is correct, at least for my Yamaha board. XLR and 1/4" line inputs route though the head amps, inserts come in after the HA's and EQ.

That depends on the mixer, there are plenty of desks where the line ins bypass all the mic pre circuitry. Assuming it's a low-medium range board though you're probably right.

And good call on the inserts, assuming he doesn't want to use them as inserts!

And you're quite right in that he should really just go to direct into his recording deck/interface anyway if he's using external mic pres.
