i am currently using the preamps built into the tascam 488 and sending the signal to my Tascam TSR-8 reel to reel.

will purchasing a standalone pre-amp benefit me greatly?

what are the pre-amps on the Tascam 488 like compared to others?

definately having a preamp would greatly improve your signal path to the TSR8. You could bypass the 488 all together. caviat get something worth while.

One to consider that won't break the bank yet is surprisingly good is the Rane MS1b.
good luck

have heard some great recordings done through the Rane. it will be an improvement .

Tascam isn't renowned for their great sounding preamps. But the TSR-8 is a great recording machine if you can swing the tape costs. I would say that with a decent preamp you could really print something nice to tape. Many to choose from in the budget good range of 400.00 to 800.00.
