pre amp to interface

Ok So say you have a mic running into a preamp and then you want to send the signal from the preamp into a firewire interface. What kind of connection would you use? like a guitar cord line? to one of the analog stereo input jacks? or xlr?

Most firewire interfaces eg Presonus Firepod, already have inbuilt preamps.

The M Audio firewire audiophile doesn't have pres, and you connect via rca jacks
