prboblems with m audio fast usb

hi,
im having some problems with this unit that i just got. i have never used a computer to record before and was looking for a cheap starting unit. so it installed ok and everythign seemed to be goign fine until i tried to play back what i had recorded. there a pops and crackles. the signel is also very low when i try and record.
i really am a total noob when it comes to pcs, tho i do have over the min specs. i use windows 7.
can any one give me some tips? i tried the m audio forums but it was not very clear.

Have you tried using another cable?

no.. i just used the one that came with it. hmm it would really not wor open'd right from the box?

Pops and crackles on playback can be due to low buffer size.
Google that in reference to whatever software you're using.

Lower buffer = lower latency and greater potential for glitches, pops etc.
Higher buffer = higher latency but smoother operation.

Unless you're doing overdubs or relying on real time playback, latency doesn't matter.
