Has any beige G3/Blue & White G3 users done this upgrade, yet? If so, what, if any, performance gains were realized, using recording/sequencing software under the 800MHz G3 upgrade? I'm at 333MHz, right now, and I'll probably get the PowerForce 800 ZIF upgrade, soon...if anything, to keep my Sims game happy.

Have you seen this?

You might also check out the user database, and forums there as well.

Should be quite a kick in the ass if your RAM is up to the task. Actually the G4's put more stress on the RAM so as long as you've got good stuff in there it shouldn't be a problem.

Which Mac do you have? What OS are you running?

I've seen the benchmark comparisons, between their 800MHz G3 & 500MHz G4...pretty impressive, but unless music apps start using the AltiVec technology, I'll stay with G3 processors.

As for my RAM...I probably need to upgrade all 3 sticks (256MB ea = 768MB total RAM), from PC66 to PC100...would be overkill, and not really do me any good to use PC133.

My Mac is a redneck re-engineered beige G3 MT 333MHz that started life as a beige G3 AIO 233MHz (aka "Molar Mac). After the PSU in the AIO died, and I found a good enough deal on a MT case, on eBay, it became a MiniTower. The 333MHz upgrde was performed about a month before the AIO PSU died. I'm using Mac OS 9.1.

I dig FrankenMacs!

Hackin' hardware is fun, ain't it?:D

Beige G3's seem to be a fickle beast though. I've read quite a few threads on the MacGurus forum from people with wierd issues. You might want to check it out over there. There are several people with intimate knowledge of those machines. Great folks.:)

My 8600 w/G3 400, 576 RAM does pretty good with 9.1+ (I've added a few pieces from 9.2.2) I just installed a Trio card with a couple WD JB drives that gave it an added boost. I'm starting to see some cool stuff for X though, so eventually I'll have to make the leap. Not on this box, though. I've played with X a bit on a Dual QS and while it looked cool, it seemed sluggish compared to my stripped-down 9.1.

I run PTFree on this beast. It's a money issue. The only audio apps I know of that use Altivec much are Logic and some of the reverb plugs. What's your app?

Right now, I've only got Cubase VST 4.1, Toast 4.1.2 and several apps that came with my M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card (just don't ask me which ones they are). Also, I have a Line6 Guitar POD 2.0, for guitar work, and am planning to add Line6's Bass POD, as soon as I have the "duckies" together for it. I'll eventually get their Guitar POD Pro & Bass POD Pro (both rackmountable), but that'll be a while, for those.

I had a demo version of Cubase once. Didn't care for it myself, but lots of people like it. I'm considering a MOTU setup. You get a lot more for your money than Digi.

That's a cool little setup there with the M-Audio card. A friend of mine just put together a PC for Gigastudio with one of those and it sounds pretty good.

I don't care for amp modelers much (I've been spoiled by the real thing) but have heard some good sounds from the PODs. They're a great tool for songwriting/homereccing. Hell, the last time Kings X played here Ty had 2 POD Pros in his rack (with a Mesa power amp ;) and his tones were great live.
