powered monitors? Unpowered? USB interface?

Which is the norm, and how are the unpowered ones usually powered? :confused: Powered mixer? Standalone amp? The USB interfaces I'm looking at say they can power speakers, what does that mean? I basically need a crash-course on what's normal in monitors and how they differ from home speakers. I build my own home speakers, and I can find books and info about those everywhere, but not monitors, so much.
 
Powered monitors have a self contained power amp. Non-powered monitors require a seperate poweramp.

I cannot imagine studio near field monitors that can truly be powered via USB. I'd love to see a link to it if you've got one.
