The thunder storms are really getting on my nurves here...

I don't notice any hum in my rig, so, I guess I just need something to keep my rig safe from lighting crash and whatnot.

Which one do I need? conditioner or surge? and which products are recommended?

thanks

The best bet is to unplug when thunderstorms are imminent.

And stay off the landlines, too. Yes, you can be seriously injured or killed by lightning while talking on a telephone.

A good bet is a UPS backup system. The better ones incorporate both surge protection and power conditioning in them, and you have the added bonus of a few minutes to bring your rig down in an orderly fashion.

Here's an interesting link on lightning facts.

This site has some way cool lightning photos:

Intereting links, C7sus.

"When you feel the electrical charge -- if your hair stands on end or your skin tingles -- lightning may be about to strike you. Drop to the ground immediately" this just might save my life one day.

Let me know if my understanding is correct, conditioner provides even/clean power to reduce hum, and surges are for protection, correct? Whats UPS exactly?

thanks

ups = uninterupted power supply? i think? anyway it's a battery that will temporarily keep everything running when the power goes out.

a1a2. your fears are valid! go buy a surge protector today. my router just got zapped the other night. it's the only thing in my house that wasn't on a surge protector. doh!

what kind? i have no idea. i've got cheap and not cheap ones and all i know is nothing that i've ever plugged into any of them has ever gotten zapped and being the lazy ass that i am, the chord for my router was too far from the nearest available surge protector so i just plugged it into the wall and bam! the last thunderstorm took it out.

actually i just took out the transformer, so it was cheap to fix but it got nailed anyway and replacing a recording setup would be a pain to the pocketbook.

when buying a UPS check out your local business liquidators. you can usually find some pretty fancy stuff for less than $100.
