Wondering if this is OK. (Can't see a problem but thought I'd ask)

I am planning to build a couple of tube circuits, preamp and compressor. In order to minimize transformer hum inside the chassis, I thought I'd put the pwr supplhy ina separate chassis and then run all the power (+250vdc, +100vdc, 6.3vac etc) to the rack mounted units. I've done this with some +/- 15v kits before. I don't see any issue, but thought I'd run it by folks here.

It's fine so long as your cables and connectors can handle rated voltage and current. Neutrik Speakon should be up to about any task; even multi-pin XLRs can handle more than you'd think. Then just make sure your multicore cable can handle the current.

I would keep the AC Transformer seperate but I would keep the rectifiers and filter caps in the amp Chassis .... the longer the run from a DC PSU to the amp the more ripple and possible hum problems possible ....

Mmmh. Hadn't thought of that. Problem is for one of the ckts the PSU is all on one PC board xformer and all. That unit has input and output xformers on the audio circuit, I suppose I could put hte transformer in it's own box and run ac to the unit... not too much of a mod.

Thanks

Yes, I would put the Transformer in a seperate box and the rectifier and caps inside the Chasssis with the Tube curcuits ... with a torroidal Xformer you are going to have a lot less magnetic field and Transformer hum than and stardard Xformer , also the Magnetic field eminates from the top and bottom of the Torroid so that if it is Mounted horizontally the field should not affect the horizontally mounted curcuit boards ....

You can also get Shielded transformers or even put a Piece of metal between the Xformer and the curcuits then ground the Piece of metal ,This will greatly reduce the ammount of magnetic field ....

Cheers
