I just thought this forum would be appropriate for my 1000th post because of all the people who have helped me along the way in building my studio. Sorry I can't remember all the names but to all of you - thank you many, many times over for all the help. I certainly couldn't have done it on my own.

Congrats on 1000.

Aren't you the guy who built his studio in a steel building? I remember seeing some pictures and thought it was a pretty nice set up.

How's the studio working out? Anything you'd change in hindsight? Any advice for someone else looking at the same idea?

Yeah that's me. Hmmm, changes? I think if I had it to do over I would have spent a little extra to angle the walls more. This would have prevented some of the standing wave/cancellation problems I had and I wouldn't have had to place as many diffusers (thanks Ethan) on some walls. I don't have a problem with outside sound getting in but the kick and bass tend to pass through the exterior walls pretty easy. Maybe brick would have been better but the cost would not have allowed it anyhow. All in all, I'm very satisfied with my building. I wish my control room was larger (it's about 16x24) but it's all I could fit in a 30x40 building. I did have it built in a way to where I could expand the building length-wise if needed (and economics allow). One side effect of the metal building was that it completely shields me from the FM radio tower directly across the street from me. As soon as you walk in the door, radios, cell phones, etc all die. Inside my house you can hear the radio station on headphones, corded telephones and my old TV (before it finally destroyed the tuner section). Another thing is anyone who doesn't know there is a studio inside thinks it's just a big garage or shop. It's really a shock when you walk inside. I'm still working on small details. Guess I'll finish one day :D I consider myself a project studio, not a commercial venture so I can be very picky about who I record. Definitely makes for a more pleasant session. Sorry to ramble on.........

You're not rambling, that's exactly the kind of stuff I wanted to hear.

We're considering building a home with 9' basement ceilings so I can build a studio. I've also thought about buying an existing home with a steel building in the backyard. I'm having a blast researching acoustics, wall construction, etc.

Thanks for the info.

I'm having a blast researching acoustics,
Hey Phyl, when you meet the Queen of Hearts, its time to leave the rabbit hole of infinity(it goes on down to nano acoustics). :D

Hey DD, concrats on 1k. Somehow I missed your thread. You've done a 'mahvalous" job. Wish I had the room you have. Your studio is a perfect example of HR enthusiasum and DIY willpower. Post some pics when you finish.
fitZ :)
