Possible to make MIDI file control sequence of samples?

In another thread, I got a response that suggested Reaper's MIDI capability could be used to control how a short sequence of musical notes are played. These notes are samples of a real instrument. But searching the Reaper 420C user guide has left me confused about what controls what.

So here's the process I hope for, but don't know if it's possible: I start with a MIDI file showing pitch and duration of about a half-dozen notes. Using Reaper, I "point" the MIDI file at the sampled files for each note, and Reaper both plays and also records the sequence. So it's operating a bit like an old music-roll piano. Possible? Or fantasy?

The Midi file has to point to some device or plugin that translates those to audio cues. The sampled notes would need to be in some type of sampler device.

Reapers midi will trigger the samples if you have correctly assigned it - thats how i use Kontakt. You can record the out to another track sure.
If you dont have a dedicated sample playback vsti then maybe google ReaSamplomatic5000

A great FREE sampler to get started with (and works well with Reaper) is Shortcircuit.

Very easy to use, you just drag-and-drop the wav file to the piano-roll keys you want to use.

Be sure to use v.1.1.2 as v.2 was abandoned.
I wish some developer would take it back over and also port it to OSX.

Wow I always get outstanding information in this forum. Thanks all for giving me a basic idea of how to make this crazy idea work, and pointing me in some good directions. I'll try to hammer out as much of the procedure as I can, so that I'll have intelligent questions should I return on this topic.
