Yonce N Mild

Voice of Sanity
My 8 year anniversary is coming up. Last year I wrote as song for my wife as a present. We typically don't buy each other much besides a card but we try to do something special for each other.
Last year I took the day off work without her knowing and cleaned the entire house, walked the dogs, mowed the lawn, did the laundry and had a pitcher of margaritas and a home made Mexican dinner waiting for her when she got home from work. After dinner I played and sang my song to her. Needless to say it was a big hit.

This year I have a similar plan but I want to make a good recording of her song. Last year I was really just getting into singing and recording vocals so my rough little track I laid down sounded pretty crappy.
So I am going to retrack the vocals and try to get a decent mix and give her a copy on CD.

I was wondering if I could get any volunteers to help with the instrumentation? Right now the track is just guitar, drums and vox. It's a pretty simple track. I wrote the guitar part and I'm a total hack so I'm sure one of you guitar gods out there could really bring it to life. If anybody wanted to add some keys, bass or strings that would be cool too. The drums are just a real basic loop so some live drums would be awesome as well. For the guitar part you wouldn't have to replicate what I wrote exactly just as long as it follows the same basic chord progressing/arrangement.

Only thing is our anniversary is Oct 21 so I'd like to have it ready by then. I plan or retracking the vocals late next week when she is due to be out of the house for a couple of hours.
I'm fine with just going with what I have with a fresh set of vox. So if it's not enough notice or whatever it's no big deal. Just thought I'd ask. It could be fun to see how this track develops.:D

If anyone is interested I'll post the lyrics and a mp3 of the track in it's current state later tonight.

Thanks,

Andy

I have a guy that can add keys for you. Let me know!

Sorry, I can't help out. My axe is 4000 miles away. But I'd love to hear this when it gets done.

Maybe let us have a whack at mixing it too?

Thanks for the offers fellas!

Absolutely! That would not only help me get a great track together but could be an excellent learning experience for me.

Ok here is the MP3, I'm a little embarrassed about my vocal performance. It will be much better this time.:)

A little background on the lyrics.

I met my wife in New Orleans during Mardi Gras 1998 on fat Tuesday. We are both from Ohio and only lived about 30 min away from each other but we met on a balcony on royal street. She was wearing a devil mask and my face was painted so we really didn't know what each other looked like until we met up at a party several weeks later.

Lyrics:
Now I can see
My destiny had brought me to that time and place
I couldn't see
Couldn't see behind the mask you wore to hide your face
in that magic place

That's how it begins
now I'm falling in
Falling in love in love with an angel
That's how it begins
now I'm falling in
Falling in love in love with an angel

My painted face
my bloodshot eyes
you saw right through
through my disguise
and underneath that easy sky
I met the girl that changed my life

That's how it begins
now I'm falling in
Falling in love in love with an angel
That's how it begins
now I'm falling in
Falling in love in love with an angel

Now it's strange to look back at the start
It's hard to believe we were ever apart
I Love your mind and your soul and you heart
I know that nothing can tear us apart

7 Years in
I'm still falling in
falling in love in love with an angel
7 Years in and I'm still falling in
I'm still falling in love more in love with my angel

Sometimes it's still hard, hard to believe
that someone like you could love someone like me
You're the reason I live you're the air that I breathe
An angle from heaven sent just for me.

7 Years in
I'm still falling in
falling in love in love with an angel
7 Years in and I'm still falling in
I'm still falling in love more in love with my angel

beautiful song!!! I think your singing would sound better with less verb -- I think it sounds good.

I can help out too, but I'm not 100% on how the offers are fitting together. I'm primarily a guitar player, but I could maybe do a subdued bass line if you've got the guitar parts covered.

edit:

here's some rough improv over it -- I added an acoustic track, a bass track, and a couple of solo breaks. See if you like how that's headed (not sure the acoustic goes anywhere, but maybe), or push in another direction. Just brainstorming...

Very nice antichef!

I like the acoustic. I originally wanted to make this an acoustic track but at the time I didn't have an acoustic to record.

Here are the vocals on their own.

You are totally right about the reverb. Way too much. The original recording is about a year old. It's kind of cool how crappy this sounds compared to what I am currently recording. It shows me that I'm making progress. For instance I now know why it's a bad idea to not record a dry vocal track.:)

I'll give the track you posted a proper listen later this afternoon once the wife heads out on errands.;)

another rough draft:

This one doesn't move the ball very far down the court -- I still couldn't get a keeper acoustic track, due to some mistakes and some unexpected background vocals. But... it's worth a quick listen to see if you like the way it's played, the tone, etc. -- I (or my replacement :D) will have to do it again no matter what, so if there's anything/everything you'd like to change, that's no problem -- and I'm really not sensitive ("insensitive" is the word, I think), so don't hold back :)

The bass track is really just a place holder too, and since there are several actual bass players around, I suggest it remain just that.

Awesome song Yonce and Mild!

Sweet emotion in your singing. I wouldn't change a thing about it.

The acoustic is a great touch antichef!..and those unexpected background vocals rock!! Precious memories forever on audio!:D

I'd for sure keep the electric part in there too...nice tone!...it adds soul to the song.

I like the simplicity of the song...uncomplicated with love moving it to where it needs to be..a love perfected piece.

I really like how the acoustic sounds. I also like the solos although they seem a little short. If you wanted to chop the vocals and slide em over a few measures to extend one of the solos that would be cool. Maybe extend one and kill one so the song doesn't get too long? They might work as is in a full mix but in the rough mix they seem rather abrupt. If you feel like messing with that some more go ahead but I would be happy with just the acoustic too. Thanks a ton for taking the time to do this!

So who's up for drums and bass? BentRabbit? TelePaul?

If anybody else wants to add anything feel free. I wouldn't mind trying a couple of different versions. Anything goes.

I'm going to record fresh vocals as soon as I can get time in the studio while the wife is out.

I'm glad you like the song true-eurt!

Cool -- when the planets line up again, I'll get a keeper acoustic track in the same style.

I should have made a disclaimer -- I made no attempt at a mix at all. I think the solos, especially the second one, are way too high. I'm happy to extend the solo (I could play over that chord progression all day :) ), but I was thinking of the solos less as solos and more as ornaments -- trying not to distract too much.

Cool sounds like we are on the same page then. If you want to extend one of the solos feel free. Otherwise they should make for nice ear candy in the final mix.:)

Nice song. I did one for my wife recently and Anfontan added some nice tele-twang on it for me. It came out great, the wife loved it.

I can add ezdrummer for you, if you'd like. I've got the mp3 and will put something together tonight.

Cheers,

I got my porch roofed earlier than expected and was able to put together a rough mix on drums for you...

If this works, I can send you a mixed version or the individual tracks for you to tinker with...

Let me know :)

Sweet! I'm listening at work so I can't really crank it but it sounds pretty good. I think the individual tracks would be best since I'm going to give everyone a shot at mixing it.

Thanks a ton!

the drums sound great to me, Bent, fwiw -- nice job!

Having the drum track will be useful for recording (or re-recording, as the case may be :) ) the other instruments, too.

Just listened to the drums again in the studio. Perfect!
I'm gonna try and get some vocals down before the wife get home from work. Wish me luck!
