Does anyone have this on LP or CD? Listening to any version I find on YouTube the instruments are coming heavily out of the R channel - are they defective uploads or is that how it was mixed? Hard to believe anyone would mix a recording like that. Or maybe my system has an issue?

For example.

All I know is it is an amazing song that showcases her incredible voice...Love it and I cover it ;) In a male voiced more blues style kind of way with just me n piano...but now I'm thinking techno...

I'll take a listen to a few versions I have and let ya know what I found later

IMO one of the greatest songs in pop music history, fantastic melody, Roberta Flack's vocal is superb.

It's coming through balanced in my playbacks (speakers and bluetooth headphones). Her voice and bass are dead center. It sounds slightly louder on the right to my ears because the gtr is over there.

But yeah - what a spectacular song and performance. Really beautiful.

Agree.

Voice, string bass, piano are coming from the center, acoustic guitar on right, percussion on left. Strings are mixed stereo... cello mid left, violins mid right. I'm listening on headphones, and it's a perfect mix.

If you're just getting right channel, you've got an issue.

Thanks, apparently there's some kind of odd acoustic thing going on with my speakers, with headphones in the receiver it sounds okay. If I stand closer to the speakers the sound rebalances.

Active or passive monitors?
If passive, maybe out of phase?

Passive. I've got "Bass Reflex" speakers from an RCA tuner/multi CD player paired with some RCA bookshelf speakers that sound pretty decent in combo run off a 200 watt Sony tuner/receiver. It's an inexpensive way to have reasonably decent speakers until I get better speakers - I'll probably get one of these GR Research kits.

Listening to the video you shared acoustic guitar is panned more right.
Her voice is set in the back center...
seems the bass is center and maybe a tad more to the left.
Piano center and maybe a smidge to the right
Cello definitely more to the left of center
Violin to center right

Definitely light on the left side of the cans

A minimalistic tender musical blanket for her beautiful voice to lay upon

Did I mention I LOVE THIS SONG!

Thanks for posting and making me revisit and dissect. It really helped me appreciate what a masterpiece it is beyond just her beautiful voice.
