Portable Recording Studio on Laptop

I'm just a hankering to turn my new portable pc into a portable studio to record my band's live performances of our originals. The guys keep saying "Just get 2 mikes and a DAT" but I'm a sucker for new technology and wanna try something completely different and get something we can use in the studio too. I've got my eye on Motu's new 828 firewire audio interface with a CM Labs MotorMix mixer (from Sweetwater's latest Motu "Dream Studio" ads.) Any feedback or suggestions? And since I'm new to the BBS, hopefully I've posted this inquiry in the right spot.
