Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum and I recently acquired a Tascam Porta One. I unjammed the play/record heads and it has been awesome to play around with.

The only problem is...it won't fast-forward or reverse. I looked inside, but was unable to figure out how many belts it should actually have. Everything on the machine seems to work fine except for FF and reverse. Could this be a missing belt or maybe the motor for these functions is separately jammed?

I'm having the exact same problem with mine. It was working great, then all of the sudden rewind and fast forward both stopped at the same time. I hope someone replies with some advice. Peace, Jonny

Okay, so I just opened it up and had a look. There are supposed to be 3 belts and they are all kinda linked together . I saw that one of mine was broken so I replaced it with a rubber band temporarily but it works great now. No problems, I might even just leave the rubber band since it's actually rewinding and fast forwarding a little faster than before. So, I would suggest to open it up on the back with a screwdriver and then look under the tape transport where the belts should be. Since you have they same problem, it should be the same belt. Its the one on top and its supposed to wrap around the two circular pieces with grooves fit for the belt. I hope this helps. It's better to try it yourself before shelving out a hundred bucks for a rubber band. Let me know if you need more details. Peace, Jonny

Fascinating. I recently obtained a new belt (the FF and Rewind one) and attempted to replace it. The problem that I encountered was that the brand-new belt was too strong compared to the older flywheel belt.

Perhaps the rubber band works because it doesn't have as much tension as a brand new belt?

Thank you for the response, I will have to try this out once I find a suitable rubber band!

Hello, I am having the same problem. Only it doesn't seem to be a problem with the belts. When I try to fast forward, the motor makes a jamming sound (as if something is stuck in the gears) and then stops by itself after a couple of seconds. The wheels and belts seem to be moving just fine. When I press rewind, the wheels move just fine too, but the tape doesn't move at all. No sound.
I have another identical machine where the FF function work just fine, but my amateur eyes can't spot any indifferences between the two. Any ideas for a fix?
