hi,

a few weeks ago i made a post about my porta 02 malfunctioning - it wouldn't record or play on the 4th track, even though the inputs/outputs were fine. i went to have it serviced and it turned out there was a broken wire on the 4th play/record head.

i had it fixed and have been recording and now the same thing has happened with the 2nd track. this is actually the third time this has happened with me and a TASCAM machine. i'm really disappointed because i think i take pretty good care of my four track - cleaning the heads, etc. and now i'm stuck with essentially a three-track.

i'm wondering what to do. i'd really like a more reliable four track, one that isn't prone to breaking down after three hours of recording...should i try a used 424 (i don't have enough $ for a new one)? any suggestions? thanks...

If you only have 3 hrs on the machine, are you still within the return period of the purchase? Maybe it is a lemon and you could exchange it for another product. It's difficult to keep your songwriting momentum going if the instrument fails. I've had similiar problems with different recording equipment. Sometimes they don't live up to expectations because the assembly line was smoking crack that day. Return it or exchanging it is fair game if the product is inferior.

hey kenneth,

thanks for the response. i should've been more clear about that...i've owned the machine for half of a year...it definitely has more than three hours on it - but probably only three hours since it was repaired.

it IS extremely frustrating...it's making me want to switch away from the whole cassette-recording and into the digital realm, but i suppose that too has it's problems.

then again, i might give a used 424 a chance. i really just don't know what to do...

Porta 2 ploblems..

Spacegirl, the same thing happened to my porta-potie 2. The #2 track went out and the service tech told me it was a loose wire. He repaired it and 5 months later track 3 is out. I'm told the these units are famous for this. I ended up resoldering the contact myself since it's no longer in warranty.

I am happy with my Tascam portastudio 414mkii...decent quality, follow the manual if their are any questions, buy a Midiverb(used)
effect for reverb. Great learning tool. I had some computer based
DAW guitar studio by Cakewalk and it was a waste of time.

Oh yeah, don't let them off the hook so easily, keep your receipts, write a letter to the manufacturer and vent about their lack of quality and TELL them you want to exchange for a better model. Get mad and Sound off to TASCAM, they had a quality control problem and you want them to resolve it.

Is this loose wire issue a problem with the newer TASCAM models, like the 424 mkIII?

I used my 424mkIII for 3-4 years, and never had any trouble. Of any kind. and it's still up for grabs. pm me.
