#12. You can blame that for just about everything ;)

It seems to me that all artistic works are getting shallower and shallower. By that I mean people are more concerned with immediate entertainment value than lasting entertainment value. Therefore, the companies that provide this are filling the mindless void with mindless entertainment. I still think there is some good stuff out there, it’s just hard to find when the shit floats to the top of the bowl. :D It seems like “classics” just aren’t being made as often anymore.

Or maybe these are just the mundane ramblings of an old man :D:D

Not Me ! (But I wish I was, 'cause maybe I'd make some money:eek: :D )

Seriously, though, I think it's probably a combination of all your choices to some extent, and depending on what market you're in.

I can understand #3, though. Boy, do I ever know those people.

Gotta be #1. Trust me, the execs know who buys this garbage. They put together these little boy bands...whatever, and they dance around like their pants are on fire, and the kids just eat that s#!t up! Plus, they know that mom and dad have the dollars to actually pay for it, which keeps the kid "happy". Mom and Dad are buying their own music, but not as regularly as the kids. It's all DOLLARS...just like any other business.

I blame everyone above but the DJ. DJs are told what to play by the tasteless program director whores and payola. Only college DJs get to decide what to play, hence college radio is generally far superior to the commercial crap.

Your question is sort of like asking who's responsible for all the crappy politicians that represent us. The government is supposed to be "of the people" but it seldom works that way. You have two powerful political parties that decide what our choices will be, and then the people have to choose the best from just a few crappy options.
In the music biz, you have just a few huge corporations like Clear Channel that dictate all programming. Music consumers are left with just a few choices: Clear Channel programming on station A or Clear Channel programming on station B.
Ever watch old movies and notice how SLOW they are? Today's movies move quicker through the plot, have quicker editing, and even put all the credits at the end instead of the beginning.
Pink Floyd wouldn't make it in today's music biz for the same reason. People want the hook NOW!
There are a lot of great musicians that find a way to get into the Clear Channel way of doing things, but there are an awful lof of "products" there too: Britney and company. The big record companies don't want to take the time to "foster" talent anymore. They want either: talent that has a proven track record based on album sales and a fan base they have created independantly, or someone beautiful and willing to sell their soul and become a marketing product.

I think, like most of popular culture, it cycles.

I was a HUGE fan of the 80's hair bands. In my opinion, these guys were came out of the smaller clubs playing their asses off. The musicians were all about machismo: outplaying and outsinging all of the other bands out there. It brought the level of playing up to a tremendous level.

But all of a sudden *BOOM* the radio stations discovered the ballads that these guys had on their albums and they lost all of their credibility. Then you had cookie-cutter bands that were around only to cash in on the hair band ballads. Suddenly the level of playing crashed (ie.: three chord songs like 'Every Rose Has It's Thorn. Ugh.)

I'm sure the Rat Pack lovers probably crapped their pants in disgust when Elvis came along, just as I'm sure Beethoven lovers probably crapped their pants in disgust when Wagner came along.

It's my fault...
First, I shouldn't invenet radio.
then I shouldn't teach 'em how.
then I shouldn't invent TV.
then I shouldn't teach 'em how.
then I shouldn't invent Rock N' Roll.
then I shouldn't teach 'em how.
then I shouldn't invent MTV.
then I shouldn't teach 'em how.
then I shouldn't invent internet.
then I shouldn't teach 'em how.
then...

...but most of all, I should stop this BBS. We should make some music instead them...

:D

teeny boppers dude! teeny boppers are responsible for everything from music to fashion.

I dont know who is guilty but I do know one thing. I dont hear anything on the radio today that I will be listening to 2,5,10 years down the line. Todays music is so disposible it makes me SICK!!! I hate boy bands, suck ass girl dancer-singers, rap, rap-rock, rap-metal, CREED....you name it. It is all bullshit, that is why I like to hear the postings on this website because it is still real music made by real people. Where is the hope for today?? Where are the musical heros that will be looked up to for generations to come??? We have no Elvis, no Beatles, no Zep, no Boston, no Skynard, no Sabbath...nothing!!! Even Kiss decided to give it up again. And, I hate when young people act like Aerosmith is THEIR band. They dont know SHIT...Aerosmith??? They stopped being Aerosmith once Tyler and Perry went to rehab!!! Metallica was the last thing that we had, and I dont know what happened there. If Axl and Slash could patch it up there might be some hope, but Slash wants to play with Wacko Jacko and Axl just sux so...I dont need this kinda pressure in my life, who started this fuckin' thread??? I about to bust a vein thinking about this!!!

HOLY SHIT im not the only one who absolutly can't stand the radio these days
i used to live for the radio but nowadays i want to jump out of a high speed vehicle when its on!!!!!!!

the only good thing is that now i only listen to CDs and i have more apriciation for the truly great bands and ARTISTS out there!

I would rather listen to talk radio than pop music radio.

There is a college radio station here that plays 85% good music, but the broadcast is so weak that you can only hear it if you are within a 10 mile radius of the college.

It seems slightly possible, and hopefully so, that the internet could be the break in the clouds for modern music. It is certainly a way for independent artists to get exposure to non-local areas, which exposure used to be completely controlled by record companies.

The problem that comes with that, is now there is so much crap around on the internet, that it is hard to sift through it all to find the good stuff, so the savvy music fan has to rely on a reliable opinion to recommend good music. That brings the politics back into play, because you have to know the right people to recommend your music before it can really get a chance.

The culprit is...

The record companies who have no respect for true art and seek to build cash flow music in the pursuit of more power, control and more money.

The industry has had long erosion from its early days of capturing the essence of talent to today's trend of business people trying to create customer sound addictions.

The record companies manipulate the radio stations for airplay and only have success with the youngest of teens that are gullible and impressed when they see kids of their own age on stage.

Recording companies used to capture the talent that was cultivated in a rich environment of clubs, coffeehouses, and local talent shows. This was a culture rich in artistic expression in which both the young and old could experience and watch.

Today we are delivered our cultural experience through 2 windows, TV and the Internet. The TV was controllable but the Internet is not, which is why we the people have flocked here to get around and beyond the control of the record companies.

These companies are even now trying to figure out how to get back control. I think the internet with its freedom of expression for the arts is, for now, the safest bastion from corporate control and as long as it remains so, will be an avenue for human expression and the frontier for the voice of artistic endeavor.

Fuck these corporate money hungry record companies and their radio. Let them have it... let them control the airwaves... they cater mainly to mindless worms who will enjoy whatever ultraproduced fodder that is slopped onto their plate.

there are always independent radio stations/shows that offer good music...... concerts that offer good music......websites that offer good music.....

the true artists/musicians will always prevail in the face of such behemeth capitalistic slime.

Jagular - its not that the classics arent being made, its just that in 15 or so years they will be classics. i blame this lack of taste of the current generation on the x chromosone. did you know that everytime a male is born he has only 50% of the x chromosomes that his father had!!

shocking i know.

The hard truth is that recording has become way too easy. Thank God because if it weren't I may not have a chance, yet in the same pref. those who have absoloutly no LOVE for the ART of SOUND or MUSIC!!!!!!!!! can easily find fame and fortune with the bucks to buy studio equipment or time. Anyone can record and if they have the "money" and the "look POTENTIAL" (meaning they are willing to be submissive in EVERY posible way) can easily find thier shinning stardom through "PERSONALLITY MANUFACTURING!" meaning that every thing sounds the same on the radio because of the many americas. Such as the corperate, the meloncolny(check spell), the bright lights bigscreen , and the fantasy america. Examples are as follows......
corporate america uses the heart throbs or slut artist with the sex sells the skimpy cloths change but the beat goes on and on and on and into the next song and song and song and the album sells covers not creativity then people become determined to like the artist because one the album is bought and two the image is prefered. I'll continue in another reply cause I'm out of space.

Ok here I am again. Now to continue the meloncolny(check spell)
are usually the mentaly disturbed who are on drug or drinking binges they prefer to torture themselves with agonizing frequencies to further cry out for help note the gothic (not to offend just an opinion) most of the modern heavy meatal or alternative is quite creative but depressingly negative it isn't informativly negative it makes the point that life sucks kill you kill me kill em all and let ....well no there probably is no God and we all become rotting corpses. mut it's just the reverse the beats and music change but the words repeat the same i hate everything and everyone message. next bright lights big screen this is close to the fantasy but the difference is the reality factor these are the ones who start with agreat idea but get sucked into a wirpool of fame and fortune they trap themselves in their own wants and the PERSONALLITY MANUFACTURS find and keep the key to keep control then the artist gives the public what the producers want them too and the public has to listen to it because the "BIG WHEELS" have somehow gained control.
(I got to continue again)
