Poll...... Studio (Jam room size) ?

My Band room and soon to be where i have my homerecording setup is 11ft by 20ft. I ahve a set of drums a digital piano Pa system and speakers a couple of amps and various guitars so it seems crowded to me .. I am trying to talk my wife into letting me build a shop in the back yard i can use as a studio which i would build approx 25ft by 30ft. She bugs me and says that i already have it better than some of my musician friends as they have even smaller rooms to jam in or have to set up in the living room and then take down after every jam. I would just like to have more room as noise isnt' a problem i bought the wife some cordless headphones so she can watch TV while we are jamming and a lot of my neighbors tell me they like to sit out and listen to us when the weather is good ... I am curious as to what size of rooms others are using out there????????? P.S I love this forum ... lots of great info !! I ordered my Sony MDR 7506 headphones today after reading all the past posts about them....
 
Well your wife would say I told you so. Your room is bigger than mine. My sound booth is only 8ft by 6ft, just big enough to put real drums in. The rest of a band has to play direct in the control room which is a whopping 12ft by 14ft. If the band wants to mic a cabinet, then they have to track it after the drums have been recorded. When I built my studio I did not want to add on to my house, so I had to use what space I had. What is nice about the room is that it has it's own bathroom and exterior door. This keeps clients from having to go through my house.

And u definitely dont want musicians wandering through your house! Drummers either....
 
My control room is about 10'X 12' and the
main room is 18'X 12'. Each room has its own
exterior door. Only drummers are allowed in the house!

Sounds better then the size of my studio...... :( I don't even have a control room, or an iso booth for that matter (unless you count an empty closet). Every thing of mine is in one room, which is pretty small.

Whats a Drummer? :D

P.S. The best room is a big one; that isn't rectangle, has a control room, numorus iso booths all different textures and sizes, and designed by an acoustic specialist.
 
Well,

Since I'm a momma's boy (hehehe) I struggle over the use of the attached garage.
We have a 22' x 24' garage and I am in half of that, even though it's all open.
I am on one side (so it's about 12'x 22' or so).
It was bigger, but I soundproofed it (built the entire room in), so the Walls are approximately 1' thick. There's a Brickwall(external),then a 2"x4" wall with Insulation inside of that. These were here when we moved here.
I then built 2"x6" walls abour 3 or 4 inches in from those. These are stuffed with insulation.
So it goes:

Brick wall/2"x4" wall/3" airspace/2"x6" wall.

I can go out in the garage and Lay into my drumkit at 3 in the morning if I want, and nobody can hear it.

I have an external Door. (we closed in the overhead doors, and put in a metal security door, complete with a pice of rebar that slides into place behind the door from holes/sockets in the wall for added security. No body will kick that door in! hahaha

My only Complaint is no bathroom.
So, I'm saving up to build a Downstairs Studio/ Upstairs Apartment nextdoor (we have an extra lot) and then I'll be out of the house.
I'm in college and work part time. i've been very lucky, and my parents are totally supportive of me.

My younger brother is "the one that made it" as I always say-He plays bass in a bnd that is signed. He's on the road right now, and about to go to Europe. Hell, 4 or 5 years ago, The Goo Goo Dolls opened for HIM!
So, it's just a matter of having good songs, and being in theright place at the right time.

my control booth is 6x14 and the main room is 17x14.control booth window is a double paned patio door glass mounted sideways.what the hell,it was free!no long distance service on telephone,we all know what happens when you turn your back on a drummer and the phone!
 
My "Live" room (during recording), "Jam" room (during practice) is 16 feet wide, and 29 feet long. On one end we have a 4 inch high drum stage that is decoupled from the floor below using U-boats from Auralex. The room is NICE and spacious for practicing in. Did you really have a question besides what size our rooms are?
