Hey guys, Im looking for a good multipurpose mic, but mainly to mic guitar amps. I was going to go with a sm57 but this guy I was talking to said that the akg d77 sounded much better for guitar amps and that it had much better tone. Give me your opinion. Thanx

Eric

Fuck his head slowly with a rotten banana and buy the SM57.

I think you mean D770. Now I will be the voice in the wilderness and say I like AKG handhelds very much, because they agree with my voice, and my partner's voices. I have no reason to believe that a D770 wouldn't be wicked for mic'ing cab. I will confess I've never tried it, and I've never used that particular stage mic. I do believe in trying gear that is too easily rejected because of standards and traditions.
There are reasons why SM57 can be found in the cabinet of 99% or so of all recording studios worldwide. It's cheap and does at least a fair job on almost anything, is excellent on a couple of things, and doesn't break. So I go both ways. AKG builds some wonderful mics, including their dynamics, which are often overlooked. But, on the other hand, if you ain't got an SM57, you ain't got shit!-Richie
