What are the differences between a pod and pod v2 for recreational home guitar recording? Any guidance would be much appreciated. Cheers.

While my memory is fuzzy - if I recall, the main difference - the POD 2.0 has more amp simulations and more speaker simulations (possibly a few more F/X options). Also, with the POD you could only get at the speaker simulations via the software whereas 2.0 allowed you to get at speaker simulations from the knobs (using the F/X know while holding down the tap tempo button - I think)

I bought the POD when it 1st came out and later installed the 2.0 upgrade chip. While I did not think the 2.0 upgrade was significantly better it did give me a few more options - I did the upgrade mainly to get at the speakers without going through software.

I too upgraded my early POD to the V2. Not a huge sonic difference just more options. I recently got the XT... holy cow, the difference in sound quality floored me. I tried for years to dislike modeling but this just about nails it...

I have a POD 2.0 and was also wondering if the XT allows for mixing and matching effects. I know the 2.0 only allows me certain combo effects strictly from the physical knobs (ie: Comp, delay, Rotary, comp+delay, Delay+chorus) but can you mix Comp+swell+delay or gourmet your effects combos with the XT?

pods suck..........IMO

Hmmm, if they suck, what amp modeler would you reccomend for someone like me who has to occasionally run a strat direct into a pa? I'm looking.

FWIW, I have been checking out the Tech21 sansamps. They weren't that hot when they first came out, but if the samples on the website can be believed, they have come a long way. I want the programmable bass DI so bad I can almost taste it! :D

Thanks, the tube amp emulator looks interesting. God help me but I'm also looking at Behringer's version on the Pod 2.

The Pod is a divisive subject for a lot of people here. For home recording when an amp simply isn’t an option I think they’re a good choice. Now most of the people who have had success with them have had to tweak the settings. Some have had success downloading the Metal package.

Personally I love the XT and what I can do with it for demos. I checked out the Tech21 sansamps and the XT had more options for direct recording. I especially like the way you can hook it up to the USB port and use guitar port to fine tune your settings. Just remember most people need less gain then they think they need.

In the end it’s probably all a mater of taste, but the bottom line for me is a good craftsman doesn’t blame his tools. Jimmy Page never did with his limits.

As a studio guitarist, one of the best guitar products I've used has been the Johnson J-Station. With a bit of patience, I'm able to set up very useable modeling and effects for both my guitars and bass (yes, it has several bass amps/cabs included). For $150 or so, it was a cheap, quality, one-stop, 24-bit solution to those situations in which micing my guitars or bass was difficult or impossible.

The J was discontinued last year, but it's still available with some searching, and many guitarists, like me, still sing the praise. It's worth a look if you're in the market.

Best,

J.

Well I guess its ok for that. I don't like them very much because i was in the studio with my band doing some recording ( i'm the drummer....no drummer jokes i can play guitar too :p ) and the guitar player used a pod to lay down scratch tracks just so me and the bassist could have the guitar in our mix. Since we don't use a click this was done live direct into the board. Anyways it sounded nothing like a real amp to me at all. Maybe theres an art to making them sound good, I dunno.... if you cant use a real amp it probably would be the right thing to buy since you don't have too many options.

IMO ;)
