I have tried to connect Line 6's "POD" to my computer using the option: guitar to the POD line input and then the POD line output to the computer's soundcard line input (I had to use a 1/4"-1/8" adapter to go into the soundcard's line input, that was purchased from Radio Shack). The software that came with Line 6's POD is Emagic's "Sound Diver ver. 2.0. NOTHING WORK"S!!! The POD works fine used as a preamp when just going guitar to amp. Is there a modification/adjustment to be made with my computer's soundcard? Would really appreciate some help.

First, the soundiver software is for MIDI control of the POD, do you have MIDI in/outs running from the POD to your MIDI port ?

Second, Does anything else work in your soundcard's line-in jack ?

Need to understand the whole set up to help.
What kind of soundcard ? , etc. . .

1st of all thank-u for the response!!! I consider myself to be pc literate (11 yrs.). I have been playing the guitar for approx. 21 yrs. Recording/pc music software approx. 3 months. Needed to let u know for communication reasons. Soundcard: crystal PnP (pos/neg/pos) audio system mpu-401 (Roland ?) Driver files:cwdmidi.vxd, mmdevldr.vxd, cwdaudix.vxd and cwdmidi.drv. When i go to install manually other drivers from the POD cd-rom it looks for file ext. names *idf. Please remember I am totally in the dark about using sound devices to pc for recording or playing. The soundcard has on it 1 line-in,1 line-out for speakers and 1 mic-in (pc mic I believe). Has a joystick controller port (have heard that sometimes the joystick controller port can be used as a midi controller) I believe a 17-pin connector. Also on the back of the computer there are 2 ports with symbols 1 port has the symbol /O/O/A and the other is /O/O/B could this be the midi line-in/line-out? Both ports are 9-pin (I believe). I believe the only thing I have is a boom-box. The POD's midi in/out are circular, I would need an adapter (2 of them) to go into the computer ports if they are indeed midi. How much do they go for? I have another (OLDER)computer w/ a soundblaster awe 64 soundcard, it has line-in/line-out, speaker out, mic-out, and joystick/midi port. How do i go midi in/out from POD if only one midi port on (OLDER computer)soundblaster awe 64 soundcard? Sorry about all this info but I originally thought I could avoid the midi and go line-in/line-out option, is midi really that much better? Would like to stay w/ (NEWER computer). Maybe put the soundbalster in newer computer. Been using the pc-mic and acoustic to record w/ cakewalk (YUCK !!!). Again thank you for the response!!!

crystal PnP: that's plug and play....

Well it can and it's a 15 pin connector.

>e symbol /O/O/A and the other is /O/O/B >could this be the midi

No those are two serial ports; don't know what kind though.
>line-in/line-out? Both ports are 9-pin (I >believe).

Ah- old fashioned serial ports.

You need a joystick to dual 5-pin DIN MIDI cable adapter, which can be had for under $30. I just sold one to a friend for $5. So look around at swap meets. With more people going for USB MIDI, these cables are going to get easier to find.

>How do i go midi in/out from POD if only one >midi port on (OLDER computer)soundblaster >awe 64 soundcard?

Same way on both soundcards. The same adapter. You need both DIN plugs to make the POD MIDI control work.

>is midi really that much better?

The MIDI is for control of the parameters on the POD or storage of sets of these parameters on the PC. The audio always goes through the line outs.

>Would like to stay w/ (NEWER computer).

The Awe 64 might sound better. Then again it might not. Sorry to be so wishy washy on that answer but I don't have a Crystal PnP card.

Semhara:
First off, your Soundiver software will not find the POD or work properly until you get the correct MIDI cable. The type you need has two DIN connectors at one end ( IN/OUT ) and two 15 pin connectors on the other. One 15 pin connector ( male ) plugs into the joystick/MIDI port on your sound card and the other is a thru port for a joystick. I bought my cable from midi-classics.com for $15.95 . . . It was the best price I found. It is item #8954. Here are links
To the site and a photo of the cable:
www.midi-classics.com/cabtypm.htm#29

After you see the photo, I'm sure you'll see how it works.
I'm not sure if the Crystal PnP ( plug n' play, BTW ) is equal in quality to the AWE 64 or not. If your serious about recording, I'd save for a better card in the future.

Again, the MIDI function of the POD is only for controlling effects and options. You don't have to use it at all, but it does add versatility.
I would stick to the computer with the best processor and hard drive. Put the AWE 64 in there if it's better. Order the cable, give it a try and come back again if you need more help.

I want to elaborate on the question posed by the topic starter, I am poised to buy the POD this Friday night as I have been totally sold on it by others that use it(not the company). I was just reading the question and checked my PC and realized that My Gina card has only the two round in/out inputs left(one is yellow and the other is red). The Large multi-pinned A/D cable is the only other port on the back of my Gina and is being used by the cable to the A/D breakout box. Because I have another card hooked up(a two year old or so Yamaha XG) and it has the 15 pin port currently not in use, can I use this second sound card to connect my POD midi cable when I finally buy it.(I already have the midi cable with the two 15 pins and the two 5 prong pins).
Thanks, Supersonic.

Theoretically, yes, with the right adapter as mentioned above. Do you have any MIDI devices you could test this on to see if you've got a MIDI driver actually loaded?
