plugins and computer problems

when i used a few plugins my comp gets bogged down . i have a
pentium 4, 1.50 gHz processor
768 DDR ram
Sonar 2.0 XL
windows XP pro
delta 66 hooked up to a OMNI breakout box
i was wondering if anyone knows how to make it so my computer is more effiecient. more streamlined. im sick of having dropouts during the end of my mixes and having to guess the last few plugins. thanks for any help.

With those system specs it seems you may need to do some tweaking in XP.
Also check for conflicts. Video cards, especially AGP 32 bit are trouble makers.
Reduce the color depth to 16 bit.
Turn off all apps. running in background
and the list goes on.
