plug-ins????

How is the Antares Tube and Antares Auto Tune 4? I need something for auto tuning since a lot of singers do need it occasionally. It sounds fake sometimes but it can make and break a recording with a decent singer. I currently have the Waves Diamond Bundle of plug-ins (minus the Tune, I have the older version). So I basically need to know what plug-ins are good in this, and what are some really good recording techniques. Thanks
 
I have used Auto-Tune in the past and it really worked well. It is probably the most widely used plug in for this. Recently though, I got Melodyne Uno. It's a program, not a plug in but it sounds better and it's easier to work with than auto tune. And from what I've used it for it's a lot more transparent than auto-tune.
 
used the demo of autotune and never really liked it. I could hear it kicking in everytime it was trying to correct....I think you can even hear it on the demos on their site.
If the singer is off just smidge on a single note or two...then I'll just use a pitch shift for those two notes.
 
I just find these autotuners very complex and time-consuming. it takes sooo much time to correct a small mistake in the tonality. till now, i just dont get the interface properly.
i have antares..but i never got it to work properly. i use the graphical view for it, but dont know when to use the tuning adjustments. how do u guys usually use antares? i recorded some vocals yesterday, and would like to fix up the pitch on some of the words.
just a question, when u guys autotune, how do u know which sounds like which? i mean i usually have the pitch flowing in my head but dont know where to correct the pitch mistake on the autotuner interface itself.

You have to know what note the vocalist is trying to hit. Then you just correct what he sang to the right pitch.
 
Well..im pretty weak at finding which note is which. How do u guys usually figure out which note the vocalist is trying to hit? do u play the desired note(s) on ur keyboard?

You know how some people use those funky vocal effects...do they use autotuners to do it? Cause then doesnt it screw up the pitch since the notes would be fluctuating?
 
you know what is cool? Avox throat. You can make yourself sound like a mentally challenged 8-year-old who can do Tuva throat-singing.

yup..heard lots about it..how much is it anyways? I would love to use it for rap vocals.

What I do is figure out what key the song is in. Then I set auto-tune to that key. When you look at the gaphic display, the horizontal lines indicate the notes that are in that key. Take what was sung and correct it to the nearest note in that key.

I don't know which funky vocal effects you are talking about.

not necessarily. songs do not always just contain the notes in the key you started in. the key of a song is pretty much just a reference/starting point. Chords change all the time and can introduce new notes altering the chord/key. Otherwise music would just be boring.
That's one of the many problems with things like auto tune or harmonizers. They don't always compensate for things like that. Have the singer sing it right, or if you MUST use auto tune...learn some music theory or how to at least hear pitches. This is music for god's sake.

Im trying to remake this song...its not english so i guess its pointless to mention the title of it. i am having difficulty finding the chords used in the song. how do u guys identify chords from songs?
 
I have a pretty good ear for figuring out chords in a song based on their position in the scale. For example, I may not be able to know right off the bat that a song is in the key of D, but I can hear that the progression is I IV V vi I. I just know what a I IV progression sounds like, without having to know exactly what key a song is in. When I need to find an exact key, I just use my guitar and a keyboard to zero in. I then replace I IV V vi I with (for example) D G A Bm D.

Knowing music theory and being able to hear intervals/chord changes is a great skill for an engineer (or a studio owner, musician, anyone involved in music production) to have.

OK, well the key of the part, or the chord.

Normally I just pitch it up to the next note if it sounds flat, or pitch it down to the next note if it sounds sharp.

In order to find out what the chords are, play along with it.

Why does people educate themselves with music then? Cause they are not brilliant as you? Maybe it's cause your not using your brains.
