Hi - are there any plug ins that simulate dif listening environments like the Focusrite VRM box does? ie they would be somewhat like a set of monitors. Thanks.

Yeah, I'd love a plug-in that makes my shitty little monitors and untreated equipment-filled room sound like I was listening on $2000 monitors in a nice big well-treated control room!

There are plugins which purport to achieve this. I entered a conversation about this some time ago, in another forum. Some are expensive and I wouldn't be inclined to trust their claims. Realistically speaking, if your monitors sound shite, then I'm afraid there's no unshiting VST that will do you any more good than using decent monitors and treating your room.

Yes, you can simulate various environments but I am not sure how this translates to the real world. I think the best way to test your mixes is to try them out in various domestic situations, using home/ car stereos, etc, which might hopefully approximate the ways your music will be listened to.

However, you can get a nice headphone amplifier which simulates the effect of monitors in differing environments and the guy who raised the question had the problem of needing to mix in hotel rooms, etc and on the move with his laptop. Again, I would approach this with caution, especially if the price equals a reasonable pair of monitors and a touch of room treatment. Even then, he was advised that it would pay him to check the finals on his home studio monitors before sending them out for mastering. Just Google headphone amp/ virtual monitor. If that's any help?

You might mean the Focusrite VRM? As its a USB device, I guess you need to select it as your audio output device when using it. Some reviews say it's noisy. I think 'learning' your headphones and monitors works as well.
