Hi All,

Does anyone have any recommendations for a free de-esser plug-in? My DAW doesn't have a stock de-esser and I want to see how it would affect the vocals in some of my mixes. Also, I haven't messed with the pitch correction software much in my DAW but if anyone has any good auto-tune plug-in recommendations it would be appreciated so I can compare.

Thanks!

waves Desser is excellent.

so is the RENN DeEsser

don't use autotune, tho, i expect all of my singers to know how to sing on key, or get another singer.
old school, baby.

Hah, was going to put a disclaimer in my OP about not really wanting to use Auto-tune but having a plug-in for it for experimentation purposes. When I first started out with studio recording I was unbelievably against it, and still am somewhat against it for most purposes. But after working in a pro studio for 2 years and seeing it used on EVERY SINGLE project I was involved in, I've learned to live with it, and accept it as another tool to shape sound, just like everything else we use. I would never dial it in to the point where an average listener can hear it, but it does serve its purpose if there's no re-tracking option available. Plus, as with everything else that we recording hobbyists/engineers, its all about experimentation baby!

Thanks for the de-esser recommedation, will check those two out.

I have Waves tune which is an autotune plug.
I only ever used it for creating harmonies from a melody, or minor corrections, but lately I've just been using protools built in elastic pitch option.

I don't know if your DAW has an equivalent, but man it's fast, simple, and transparent, as long as the singer was close.
I just select the word of syllable, hit b (to cut that chunk out of the region), then drag the pitch figure up or down.

It's incredibly natural because it doesn't flatten out note transition like auto-tune plugs can.
It shifts a passage up or down, but maintains the singers natural variation.
Simples. :)

SpitFish -- One of the best de-essers I've ever used (hardware or soft) and as a bonus, it's freeware.

Hey Steen,

That's exactly what I need, just looking for something that can very subtly tweak a pitch without a flat transition. Some auto-tune software I've used in the past lets you fully control the transition part so that it can sound natural rather than auto-tuned (providing the singer is quite close to the actual note, otherwise I would do another take). I am one of the few around here who uses Digital Performer, and I haven't messed around much with its pitch correction software, but could be that it already has everything I need. I'll start there and then check out waves tune.

Massive: thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely check out SpitFish.

Spitfish is excellent.

I'm willing to gather the stock one in your daw (if there is one) is also fine.

Auto tune is a bit expensive. I personally like and use Melodyne. The full version of cubase comes with a decent inclusive one.

I'm very happy with the Massey Desser....it works great, and you can dial it exactly how you like it.
Like most of the Massey plug-ins. I like them enough to purchase after free demo download.
I don't use an auto-tune, but occasionaly the basic Melodyne is very useful as an option of last resort to save a track. lol

Massey stuff is Pro Tools only though (except the eq and compressor).

O.k...Thanks...I thought I received a Massey email update that said the plug-ins were availible in VST now, but I didn't realize the De-esser was Protools only.
